That all depends on the deceased. What kind of person were they? At my mom's wake, we all wore colorful clothes because where yes, we were mourning the loss, we were also celebrating the life and she was a very bright and colorful individual.

Black is the appropriate color for wakes and funerals. Depending upon the deceased, conservative clothing is also appropriate.

I knew of a wake that asked the mourners to wear colorful clothing, especially those Hawaiian-style flowery shirts. The deceased loved Hawaii and visiting the island. The widow thought that this would be a nice way to remember her spouse.

Depends on the culture. Mostly black is the way to go. In China, it would be white. Ancient Celts wore red.

traditionally, black is worn at a wake, but dark blue and grey are also acceptable colors.
although when a dear cousin of mine passed away, her favorite color had been pink. i dont think there was a dark color in the building

It's a wake, and yes, it's respectful to wear black to show you're in mourning.

Only if you are related to the deceased. Other than that a dark colored suit, or dress, is appropriate.
