It depends a lot on your club head speed. If you aren't sure, or can't at least ball park it, you really should have it checked out.
I, often to my own detriment, have a very fast swing speed, so a ball like the ProV-1 or ProV-1x works very well for me. I also like the less expensive Titlist NXT's, they go a mile and are reasonably workable. Also, Bridgestone has a couple of balls out now that are very good; I like the B330-s and they perform very similarly to the ProV-1, but cost a little less.
If, however, you have a swing speed in the 80's or 90's vs 120+ mph, you will hit a lower compression ball like the Nike Mojo, Titlist SoLo, Precept Laddie considerably farther and should probably look to go that way. Hope that helps.

All of the brands mentioned have many different types of golf balls. Titleist must have 20 different types of balls - 2 piece balls, 3 piece balls, different dimple patterns, different number of dimples, different cover materials, etc.. It's the same for all of the manufacturers. The information on the back of the box will give you some indication as to what type of ball is better suited for your particular swing but there are so many variables. Trial and error - start cheap and work your way up tot he best ball for your swing.

personaly my top five are pro v1, nxt tour, taylormade red, taylormade black, nxt. But like someone said earlier it all depends on your swing speed and what you want out of a ball. You can go to your closest golf store and get you swing speed tested and figure out which golf balls are best for you.

Nike One Black, Callaway HX Tour, nothing top flite, nothing intech, Titleist Pro V1, some golf balls are expensive and i've heard some people say the lower brand is better, but the opposite too. I dont think Srixon is any good but they have the most patents:)
