I am also trying to get fit this year so I understand where you are coming from. There are so many things you can do. I joined www.sparkpeople.com. This website allows you to keep track of everything and it also lets you pick out meal plans for the week. It also has a community of people who are all trying to lose weight, so you don't feel by yourself. I would check it out and give it a try, because it will change your life. I am actually going to buy the biggest loser work out video. I heard it is great and I know someone who has lost weight with it. As for the Y, it has so many things to help anyone lose weight. I say take kick boxing or some great cardo class, but make sure you do some weight training, because no one loses weight just doing cardo.

I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.
It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.
A sight with some really cool diet calculators and interesting calorie counting calculators is here. Check it out.

Stay motivated, and get up and walk every day. I seriously lost all my weight starting off my day on my walk.
Good LUCK!

Start by cutting calories! Major. I reccomend staying in the thousand range. Then go from there. There are a ton of low calorie foods and you can drink 0 calorie drinks to help. Low calorie foods like salad (just lettuce really) and low cal dressings. Fruits. There is a kind of sliced turkey that is only 20 cals per slice. There is sugar free jello which is really good as a low cal food. And like I said I wouldn't waste your calories on any drinks unless you need some calcium from milk or something...but then drink the skim milk or fat free milk because it has less calories.

take baby steps don't go too drastic. Change your eating habits make it an effort to watch your portions avoid junk food and sodas. Try the treadmill do a 30 minute walk then when your ready build up to jogging then running. Also you can try weights they help burn fat even if your just sitting down doing nothing.

Jennifer,
I have the perfect answer. You would probably be well served by joining an online diet website (like ediets except not costing $250/year). My two best picks are fitday.com and http://SparkPeople.com (both are free and offer guidance for beginners). You can do it!
