just to let some people know, the information from most was very helpful, thank you, and to the rude people out there asking why i have an animal and on benefit its becasue i have a disabled son and the dog was a puppy when we got her eight years ago, so she has been good for him, also i dont work not becasue i dont want to but becasue i get carers for looking after my son. please dont judge peeople until you know the facts.

I think the Humane society could help you out.

If you are on benefits it might be worth getting in touch with the RSPCA. They can actually help out with things like this. Other than that would have said in hindsight you should have had the dog insured. It only costs about £10 a month. WE are on a low income and have two dogs..yet we manage to insure them both. Lucky cos we just got landed with a £700 vet bill! You may also like to try the dogs trust. Give them a ring and see what they can suggest. Most vets will take your circumstances into consideration and can let you pay over a period of months. If they are good that is. I hope all goes well

I have no problem with anyone having pets. No matter how they live their life. It's our right in this country.
As I suggested earlier, the PDSA or the RSPCA will take on people on housing benifit. The RSPCA will ask for a small charge and the PDSA will not ask, but would like a donation. I used to give them a few quid when I could, when I was on benifits.
There may be other similar places, although the best places to start would be them. Good luck!

Firstly I agree with you nobody has the right to judge you, there but for the grace of God can go any of us. If you have an RSPCA or PDSA group in your area they will be able to help you and only ask for a small donation or a reduced fee and will give you time to pay. Also some vets are very good and if you explain the circumstances to them may be able to let you pay the bill weekly.

Charities are out there for pet owners like you and your son so check yellow pages and call around for advice from them. Some times they refer you to your local vet and you can come to an arrangement where they meet the cost and you don't have to travel so far.
Good luck

You obviously feel the need to justify yourself. And you've already posted this question. Find your nearest PDSA clinic.
