I have a 6 month old, male, miniature dachshund. I would like to get another one so he can have someone to play with, he is a very loving and sweet puppy so far he gets along pretty well with other dogs, unless the other dog doesnt like him or finds him annoying and too playful. But I dont know if I should get a male or female? I want them to be friends, not mates. But how can I prevent this if i were to get a female? Do you think it would be okay to get a male, or will they act territorial? And if I wanted to get another breed of dog, how will I know what type is best so they will get along?

Either male or female SHOULD get along fine if they are both altered and grow up together as puppies.

At 6 months, your dog may have some territorial behaviors already, so I would recommend a female dog just for safety's sake. Additionally, a younger dog will usually defer to the older, so your dog may feel less threatened with a younger pup. This, however, could be reversed if the pup you get grows to be larger than your dachsund, so you may have troubles later, but if both pups are trained and well socialized, you should be okay.

Make sure that when you first get a pup, you monitor how they react to each other before they are ever left alone together.

If both animals are spayed/neutered, then it doesn't really matter what sex you get. Unspayed/neutered tend to act more aggressive and territorial, especially the males. As it is a miniature dachshund, I would suggest another small dog, checked out for temperament BEFORE purchase/adoption.

On the other hand...you don't really need another dog. He already has you, and as far as he is concerned, that's quite enough. There is a chance (especially with the small breeds) that instead of a playmate, the other dog will be considered a competitor for your affections. Just rub his ears and pat his tummy, and he'll be happy.

If you get a male you will be getting a playmate, and if you get a female you will be getting a companion. If you get another male there may be territorial issues, and you might want to test out the dogs on your property to see what happens. If you get another breed of dog, as long as it is 6 weeks or so, it shouldn't matter. The miniature will prolly become dominent and be the "father" of the other dog, regardless of full grown size.

Either male or female would be fine, they are young and would grow up together. I would try to get a dog about the same size. Or you could get a kitty. They are playful and would get along good. I have a few of both.

If your male is neutered then you can get a female, but if your male is not neutered then i suggest a male, if the male gets in to a fight call a trainer or a vet or even the shelter.
