If only 1 digit is different and the make, model, colour etc is correct, or the issuing authority have photographic evidence, then you don't really stand a chance of getting away with it.
You could try contesting it, but unless it's a totally different number plate, I think you'll just find yourself incurring the court cost on top of the fine.
It's your call, but a very big gamble, contrary to the media most Courts take motoring offences very seriously and the days of the "technicality" are long gone.
You don't include anything in your question about being innocent of the offence, so why not just do the decent thing and pay up.

A lot would depend on how incorrect the registration number was. Also does the vehicle match the discription, on the citation? Then this all comes down to the judge, and how meticulous he wants to be.

If there is a precedent that will probably decide.

I got a fixed penalty years ago for doing 62 down the Marylebone Underpass on my bike. Surrendered my licence at the time and it was returned to me saying this matter could not be dealt with through the fixed penalty system. (i should have gotten an instant ban for doing twice the legal speed limit.)

So if is down to the computersystem ... you'll probably get away with it. Otherwise get a lawyer and let them sort it out. Because if you let it go to court you might find the judge ain't interested in some mere layman standing there arguing legal points.
Good luck

It won't matter is there is an incorrect number on the registration. If the rest of the information is correct. especially your name and date of birth, you won't get out of it.
