I think this is an excellent question and I concur with your point. I have also wondered about this.
Personally I think it is because people know, deep inside, that Jesus is who he said he was. The non-believers fight against thinking that, however they still mock his name.

First of all God is not offended in mere words. what offends god is those that dont give him thanks. or those that dont recognize his hand in all things. Something like that.
For unbelievers to cuss and swear it is NOT the Duty of a believer to Vent anger at soemthing that is SO meaningless.
jesus forgives all blasphemy except against the holy ghost.
therefore do not put on your Cloak of righteousness for something that is so minor, and Puffing up yourself to be made a better person for doing so. What is condemning is that many christians will judge a poor man with their language, but they will stay silent and turn the other way or even cross the street to get away from preaching about serious sins. cussing is a mole hill, blaspheming the Holy Ghost is the top of the Mountain.
Please reevaluate your criteria for judging others.
cussing is near the bottom, though not the least of all sins. saying the lords name in vain, is the same thing as cussing but it can also be done in public and in private prayers. Remember the lips of many that Say LORD LORD have hearts that are from the LORD.
then again you have other transgression of "overdoing" the lords name. this is the same thing as using it vain, or without true merit.
remember a speck in your eye is a log in someone elses opinion and judgement too.

People don't really understand what taking the lord's name in vain means. It isn't saying "Jesus Christ" or "GodDamnit". It means to USE God's name. Yes, that was a full sentance. God's name wasn't meant to be a gimick. Who are you to put his face on a billboard just so you can be President?
Saying JC's name is just asking for a little help, and who doesn't want God to smite that burned pot of potatoes when company is coming? Being a good Christian doesn't mean blindly following...God doesn't want us to be a bunch of lemmings...Being a good Christian means asking questions, and re-evaluating our conclusions.

Because we can. It makes a point and gets attention. My late father was a supposedly devout Catholic, and he used to say "Jesus H. Christ Almighty" every thirty seconds. He also lived to be 85, so it doesn't look like anyone "up there" was too upset about it. If it bothers you, ignore it. People are going to say whatever they're going to say. If your gods have anything to do with it, I suppose they'll take care of it themselves.

It's a cultural thing. If you grow up in a culture that uses Jesus, Christ, God, or Waffle as an expression of anger/frustration/whatever then there is a good chance you will too.

Swearing it something that varies from society to society. The French Canadians swear by saying "tabernac", what the hell is that? As for atheists using your superstitious god terms as swear words, it is a sign of our disrespect for your superstitions.
