GTR2 for the PC is by far the most realistic. The Nurburgring doesn't come with the game, but you can download it from the Internet.

Nordschleife is another name for the track. You'll also want a steering wheel and pedals. The Logitech G25 is one of the best, but it's $300.

Assuming you're not going to be driving a 500HP racecar on slicks, I'd practice with the Lotus Elise on hard compound tires with minimum front spoiler and rear wing.

The virtue of a real simulation like GTR2 is that you'll get some idea of the actual difficulty and crash some, provided that you run it in simulation mode. With a simple game, you'll feel like you are invincible and can drive badly, and still not crash.

I read somewhere that Sony put so much time and money into GT4 for the PS2 that the Nurburgring ended up being only 28 mm (millimeters!) shorter than the original. That's not so bad!
Also I've heard nothing but rave, rave reviews about GTR the game for the PC. I think either of these should give you a good idea of how the track is laid out.

GTR, GTR2 or even GT Legends on PC. Have ddriven round it many laps on these, but trust me nothing compares to the real thing. When you go take spare underpants! A lot of the main circuit is 2nd/3rd gears but when you get them right wow :)

Grand Turismo for the PS2 doesn't do a bad job at all, but that GTR2 game is good too. Take you're pick!

Purchase the old movie "Grand Prix" with James Garner. You will learn an awful lot. You will love it as it has driver's view footage of almost all the old European courses. Amazon.com has it.

Gran Turismo 4 for PS2. I want to drive it too, they say anything under 10 minutes is good.
Good Luck :-)
