The following sentence the asker has inserted in his question narrative should be in the past tense: "Only small sects like Mormons do and they are persecuted like criminals for doing so."
The sentence should read as follows: "The Mormon Church, now 13 million strong all over the world, no longer practice polygamy and have not done so since October 1890."
The Mormon Church, no small sect at all, do not practice polygamy because it is against the law. Only small splinter groups that profess some Mormon beliefs practice polygamy, but they are still violating federal and state laws.
Any member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints found to be practicing polygamy are immediately excommunicated from the church.
Does that say that Mormons still practice polygamy? I think not.

multiple wives probably isn't much of a "privilage," but an adaptive strategy for ensuring the good of your group in a harsh environment.
the mormon pioneers for example... without polygamy, they may have all died off in the wilderness that was utah in 1847.
and for the African tribes, the wives find they do better for their future children to marry a rich guy with several wives than a single guy with no money. so it can be good for both parties. i wouldn't call it a special privilage, just a strategy.
