P.S.: History of Islam is full of Martyrs and this place will not be suitable for the complete list but perhaps this answers your question.

Concept of a "Martyr" in Christianity and Islam are similar but not necessarily the same...
Martyr:
M`ARTYR, n. Gr. a witness. One who, by his death, bears witness to the truth of the gospel. Stephen was the first christian martyr.

To be a martyr signifies only to witness the truth of Christ.

1. One who suffers death in defense of any cause. We say, a man dies a martyr to his political principles or to the cause of liberty.
M`ARTYR, v.t. To put to death for adhering to what one believes to be the truth; to sacrifice one on account of his faith or profession.
1. To murder; to destroy.
Source: King James Dictionary

Except; in Islam; the definition of martyr is not limited to "being assassinated" (for the lack of better word). Like in Islam you are considered a martyr even if you are killed (accidental or otherwise) while you are one your way to the Mosque or if you die with the love of Ahl al-Bayt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahl_ul-Bayt etc.

All this separatism that goes on my goodness, who cares? A martyr is a martyr because man said he/she is and it is a matter of opinion isnt it? Muslim, Christian, Jew, Buddhist are not we all human? We really go to get over it already and just push faster into the future. I want to go like a runaway freight train when this goes on. No one needs an egotistic view on what they are just be yourself, no one has to impress anyone at all. There was a 20 year old boy who swam out and saved two boys from drowning and got caught in the undertow himself and he died. The two little boys were 6 and 9. But the 20 year old was married and just had his own baby. No one asked if he was white, black purple, muslim or anything like that he was a dead hero and humane.
God Bless everyone please?

Yes, there are plenty. In fact, many of the men and women you and other Christians and Jews would recognize as martyrs, we Muslims would also recognize as martyrs.

Here is an example of a man considered a martyr by Muslims. He was a famous sahabi (companion) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace:

Muslims have a twisted idea of what it means to be a martyr. They think that a suicide bomber is a martyr. This is not the Christian definition of a martyr.

A Christian martyr is someone who was given a choice of publicly renouncing their faith in Jesus (God in the flesh) or die. They were faithful to Jesus, so they would not renounce their Christian faith. As a result, they were put to death by the non-Christians.

The Early Muslims who fought in the cause of God against the idolaters. Only God knows who were his true martyrs for he knows whats in the breasts of men. And no the 9/11 Hi-Jackers (even though I have till yet to see any conclusive proof they were Muslim), were NOT MARTYRS they were CRIMINALS. Suicide Bombers are not MARTYRS, this where the people start following Osama instead of God. And God knows best.

Narrated Jundub: The Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said, "A man was inflicted with wounds and he committed suicide, and so God said: 'My slave has caused death on himself hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise for him.' " [Sahih Al-Bukhâri, 2/1364 (O.P.445)]

Book 020, Number 4706:

Narrated Jabir ibn Atik:

The Apostle of God (peace_be_upon_him) came to visit Abdullah ibn Thabit who was ill. He found that he was dominated (by the divine decree). The Apostle of God (peace_be_upon_him) called him loudly, but he did not respond.

He uttered the Qur'anic verse "We belong to God and to Him do we return" and he said: We have been dominated against you, AburRabi'. Then the women cried and wept, and Ibn Atik began to silence them. The Apostle of God (peace_be_upon_him) said: Leave them, when the divine decree is made, no woman should weep.

They (the people) asked: What is necessary happening, Apostle of God? He replied: Death. His daughter said: I hope you will be a martyr, for you have completed your preparations for jihad. The Apostle of God (peace_be_upon_him) said: God Most High gave him a reward according to his intentions. What do you consider martyrdom?

They said: Being killed in the cause of God.

The Apostle of God (peace_be_upon_him) said: There are seven types of martyrdom in addition to being killed in God's cause: one who dies of plague is a martyr; one who is drowned is a martyr; one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr; one who dies of an internal complaint is a martyr; one who is burnt to death is a martyr; who one is killed by a building falling on him is a martyr; and a woman who dies while pregnant is a martyr.

There are many but the one that springs to mind is the Prophet's (pbuh) uncle Hamza ibn 'Abdul Muttalib (ra).

EDIT: I would also say Malcolm X (Malik El-Shabazz) is a Martyr.

It is sometimes hard to identify muslim martyrs. The suicide bombs make such a mess of their bodies they have to do DNA tests to make sure who they were.
