Im in similair situation. the answer in short is no, you don't need a lie to make you happy. in truth as a christian you will be spreading hate and misery then you may realize. the religions central tenet is that if you don't believe you go to hell. you clearly have non believer friends, tell do you want them to know that you think their going to hell for being the way you are now? this life is all we have, I suggest that you live it to the fullest and be grateful for what the one we have. btw if you think science can't be as magical I give you this quote "I am made from the dust of the stars And the oceans flow in my veins" song is called presto by Rush, also check out christopher hitchens

What does the word "God" mean to me?
To me the word "God" has attached almost too much meaning.
It is the word my mother used to describe to me a super natural being from a book called the "Bible".
It is the word that others say represents an all powerful supernatural force who as I was told, created everything. Well they never answered me when I asked if it, "God" that is, created Its self.
God... God is the word I used to try to imagine a being that is all powerful and controls or perhaps created all of our existence and set the laws of the universe in motion.
God is the word that frustrates me when I ask for God to reveal God's self to me in a way that my human brain could measure and acknowledge and yet God has not appeared. Am I incapable or is "God" unwilling?
God is the word that relates to other words from various religions who appear to want to monopolize the idea of an existence of a supreme being. The idea of one all power being "God", they want to use this word "God" to exact mind control by suggesting stories about this "God" and what this "God" wants us to do and not to do. This word "God" the idea of this being that they say they are the messengers of...
God to me is a possibility, I can neither deny nor confirm that "God" exist or does not exist.
I personally believe that eventually technology will advance beyond HUMAN potential and that technology with it's intelligence will infinitely transform itself to beyond millions upon millions of times our current level of intelligence. Then perhaps some living force will have the opportunity to see "God" while maybe seeing "God" means evolving to equal "God" i.e. becoming one into "God".
God is an elusive thought as is the meaning of life.

I am not going to answer the question, but i have a question to Bruce G, he is basically saying that god has to become a human to know what is good or bad for a human.
So then it must also be true that a designer or manufacture, just say of a VCR must become a VCR in order to know what is good or bad for the VCR.
It is common sense to know what is good or bad for a VCR, god does not need to become a human to create a human.
The ones how want to understand will understand.

To me, God is not a "what"...rather, a "Who."
I accept God as a Person, for how could He create us as persons if He was not first a Person Himself.
And I do not believe that God is an old man with a long, white beard. He is ever-fresh, youthful and has the hue of beautiful newly formed rain clouds; He is playing on a flute and has captured the minds of all living entities with His playing. He sports in the fields and bowers of Vrindaban with His boyfriends the cowherd boys and His girlfriends, the milkmaids. His name is Krishna, and His name means, "the all-attractive." He is waiting for all to come to His eternal abode.

God (capitalized) refers to the supreme sovereign of the universe, the Creator of the universe and all in it, whose name is Jehovah.(Psalms 83:18)
god (small g) can refer to any number of deities or entities worshiped consciously or unconsciously by humans. The Bible also refers to humans as gods. (Psalms82:6, Isaiah41:23,John10:34)
