get a live trap and catch a squirrel in it ,get your dog to see and smell the squirrel every other day.then find a road kill squirrel and start dragging it on a rope in the yard ,let your dog smell the sent ,keep doing this and he will learn whats going on .

Some dogs have some natural ability, this would make it easier, some get over excited once they know whats going on , and make more noise than their worth. try getting him to spot them from a sitting postition, Only let him give chase upon your approval.
