In short response to the question and some of the previous people to answer...
1) It is NOT an illegal war. Iraq was in violation (numerous times) of the Cease-Fire agreement that ended the hostilities known as "Desert Storm"... once that agreement was violated, agression was warranted and justified... P-E-R-I-O-D
2) The US military does NOT target civilians and/or children.... to ASSume this is insane...
3) It IS a war in which the major military action of the overthrow is completed. Much like after WWII, the mission now is to be a security detail as the new government takes form and the infrastructure is rebuilt...
4) WoMD were found. Both in full form in small scale, and in component form in LARGE scale. I don't think that a nation that is not supposed to possess ANYTHINg that can lead to WoMD should have over 30 TONS of Yellow Cake Uranium ore in a weapons facility.
5) Some of us who are for the war/peacekeeping effort ARE veterans of the military. Saying that all supporters should be there fighting is an ignorant statement. Our all VOLUNTEER military is honorably doing what they signed up to do. Although I can honestly say that if ever called upon again, even at a bit older age now, I would PROUDLY do service to my country again.
IMHO people are against the war, mostly, because they are ignorant to the facts, because the media does not focus on the actual GOOD things that are happening within Iraq thanks to our efforts, and because uber-liberal rants fit right in to the minds of the younger people who have no practical experience as to how the world really works (they have yet to realize that John Lennon's 'Imagine' Utopia is not ever going to be a possibility)....

The war is over. We invaded and captured the country and killed their leaders. We even set up a puppet government.
Now if we could just stop killing people who don't agree with us we could bring our people home before they get killed.
It's not a religious war it's a political war.
It's not the Christians against the Muslims.
It's the Republicans against the Muslims.
Electing a Democrat for president is the only way I see to end the killing and make the world a safer place. Even if it's Hillary.
I think you have to be mentally unstable to love war. I'm suprised so many in this country think the same as the enemy and want to continue killing people. Heck even a few republicans are starting to develop a consience.

1. Because it was based on lies. Even Bush has admitted that SH had no WMDs.
2. Because it's pointless.
Most Americans, including our President, simply do not understand the Iraqi mindset or the mindset of most Middle Eastern countries.
Democracy is a concept that it totally alien to those people. The don't comprehend it and don't see any benefit from it. The only political sub-division that matters is the local tribe. Strong leadership at the tribal level is mandatory. Most Westerners see this as tyranny and it is but it's the only thing that is understood and respected in a tribal culture.
Attempting to negotiate with a tribal leader is seen as a sign of weakness. The only way to earn his respect is to knock the dog-snot out of him and then KEEP THE PRESSURE UP. As soon as you ease up, you've shown weakness and he'll be in your face in an instant.
While it is possible to change the mindset of a society, it takes a committment of 50 - 100 years or more. Often a LOT more. Look how long it has taken from the Emancipation Proclamation to even approach something like racial equality in this country -- and we aren't there yet!
If the US and the West are not willing to make a 50+ year committment in Iraq, we should simply get out and let them get on with what works for them.
Does that mean that some other tyrant will come to power? Probably. But that's the way that things work there. It's the norm. Until the West can get it through their thick skulls and accept the norms of a different society we will be doomed to repeat our failures.

because it's an unjustified war and with the war, has US been safer? or has Iraq been safer? saddam is removed from power, which is rather a by-product of the war (anyway it was good) but US kept staying there and iraq is now a living hell. Innocent Iraqis are suffering for nothing and US soldiers are dying for nothing. US and it's loyal pets could have done better if they really wanted to bring peace in the world but their intentions are fake and they have hidden agendas. Politics is full of crap.

Because they do not understand anything on war. The Media mis-represents everything about the war. Takes only the negatives.
And people jump all over it

Because a lot of people think talk is the solution to every problem. Unfortunately most people who believe that ignore world history from 1930-1939. When the enemy is not interested in talk nothing will stop him except force and if you don't stop the threat soon enough it becomes uncontrollable.

Because they disagree with the false pretenses cited by the Bush administration as a reason to oust Hussein. Although, I agree that getting Hussein out was good, I don't believe we should be able to make up reasons to go to war and later say the ends justified the means.

People naturally prefer peace to war.
But some don't realize that there are things worse than war.
