I mean, those zany, madcap offbeat humourists who were so brave, so controversial as to make a film lampooning the life of Jesus.

How cool would it be if they reformed and did a "Life of Mohammed?"

Would be funnier if they did the life of a Red necked, gun toting, Texan Republican with absolutely no brain cells.

God knows they give us the biggest laughs over here!!

I am presuming that you have actually never seen "The Life of Brian" but have just read about it in some publication put out by some "conservative" Christian group on another.

The film does not lampoon Jesus at all. Actually, the movie is respectful toward Christian icons: The Nativity is shown in discreet long-shot (with halos); a solemn Jesus (no halo) gives the Sermon on the Mount to a huge crowd who all listen peacefully and intently (except for the people right at the back who can't hear properly and mishear it as "blessed are the cheesemakers").

What Life of Brian makes fun is the talent of human beings to get the wrong end of the stick. Hence you have Judean freedom fighters deciding to drive out all the Roman occupiers - except for those involved in wine, road, aqueducts, education, public health etc. You have the same freedom fighters who are more likely to fight other freedom fighter groups than the Romans because the other groups are SLIGHTLY different to them.

As Terry Jones once put it, Life of Brian "makes fun of the propensity of human beings to take what somebody has taught — peace, and love your neighbor — and then spend 2000 years killing each other because they can’t really agree quite what way it was said, or who the neighbors were". This is seen in the scene when Brian is dubbed a messiah by an ignorant Jerusalem mob, who see his every action - losing a sandal or giving away a gourd - as proof of his divinity. "See, he has given us a shoe!" "No -- cast off the shoe! Follow the gourd!" You know that within a generation, the Shoe-ists and Gourd-ists will be killing each other.

The fact that people are getting so hot and bothered about a movie which they've never ever seen shows the trueness of this sentiment.

I think if they did, it would be called "Life of Wahid", and be about a next-door neighbour to Mohammed who constantly gets mistaken for Islam's holy prophet.

Obviously, you never saw the film. More than anything, it's brilliant satire of sectarianism in both religion and politics (the People's Front of Judea vs. The Judean People's Front, neither of whom are particularily interested in attacking the Romans, just each other).

Jesus makes but two early appearences in the film; first when the Three Wise Men go to the wrong stable; then, when Brian and his friends try to hear the Sermon on the Mount ("The Greek shall inherit the Earth?").

I'd love such a movie, but unfortunately, the wonderful Graham Chapman succumbed to cancer some 15 years ago.

The funny thing is did you know that they edited a whole charcter out of the Life of Brian because it offended ..... jews

" A whole section featuring a mid-film appearance of Idle's 'Judean People's Front' suicide squad was cut from Life Of Brian - partly to avoid offending potential Jewish promoters and executives (the Fro nt's leader, Otto, is presented as a Jewish Nazi with a Hitler-tache and swastika-amended Star Of David , the leader of the suicide squad who tries to rid Israel of non-Jews, foreigners and gypsies.), Idle himself suggested this cut and the end of the film appearance by the troupe had to be re-shot slightly. "

Ironically the current israeli vice president Avigdor Lieberman has exactly the same Nazi views - to expel all non-jews from Israel!!

seems its OK to offend some religions but not others

Mel Gibson even edited a line out of the bible so as not to offend Jewish groups -lol

Why dont they do a comedy mocking the holocaust - now that would be controversial

So why dont Jews make a comedy laughing at the Holocaust or Americans a comedy making fun of 9/11?

Pretty cool but the Life of Brian got banned - what would happen if they tried doing one about Mohammed - you're not even allowed to depict Mohammed (according to Muslims who believe their values are more important than everyone elses)

All that fuss over those Danish cartoons... Maybe it would be best if they didn't. We don't want Muslims rioting, do we? If education was better and more widespread people would grow out of religion the way kids stop believing in santa.

It was insulting to the memory of Jesus. It would be just as insulting to the memory of Mohammad.

This smells of a certain sense of superiority that is often a cover for a deep seated feeling of insecurity. You really don't need to make fun of others to feel good about your self you know.

You are probably a conservative republican. You guys are so predictable.

love and blessings Don

There's limited subject matter-obviously the many traditions surrounding Christ were just asking to be lampooned but how many people know anything about Mohammed other than that he had dubious sexual tastes?
