"Just a little around the edges." gives you just that......... a little around the edges.......no layers ...no real amount of hair cut off, barely a hair cut. Then when we do exactly what you said, You would complain that it needs to be shorter. Then we have to do the whole haircut over again." And most stylist work on a commission pay ." You could describe a bit more lierally or bring in a picture that would give a much better description of what you want. Ya see lack of communication is the problem in most situations, That is why having the gift of gab is especially important when it comes to being a hairstylist. I would never let the conversation end with "a little off the edges" I would always say "are you letting your layers grow out ?" or what type of hair style would you like to be at in the near future. Do you curl your hair everyday? Do you want a wash and go type style? It all depends on the person. For your own knowledge know that a stylist is not a mindreader. She/he can only go with what you tell them or what they can get out of you by their questions. If you see that is not going to be short enough say something before the whole haircut is finished, and the stylist starts putting the gel in her hands for the finish style. If you get a clipper cut know what attachment number you want on the bottom and what you want it faded into....For example " I would like a #1 on the bottom and it faded into a #6 on top with the corners cut sortof rounded and my neak line squared in back and no side burns please." Oh and could you please wash it after the cut I have to go back to work. Oh...and I forgot I have spikey gel in my hair so you'll have to wash it before too so your clipper blades don't get ****** up. And dry it too because everyone knows that clippers don't give an even cut on wet hair...... I could go on and on . but you see there is alot more to it than what you think..

That is quite strange and not a good business practice. This way they would soon lose customers and business. Perhaps the training given to the hairdressers was not proper, as hair is such a sensitive thing to most people that they would like to wear it exactly the way they feel suits them.
Maybe you can tell them what is the exact style you want, how much length you want to be shortened and how you intend wearing it after the hair is done. If you have a picture or yours (or of someone else) with the type of hair after it is dressed the way you like it done, you can take it with you and show it to the person who will do your hair. S/he would get a good idea thereafter.
If someone has done a proper hair job the way you want it to be done, it would be to your advantage to get yourself photographed as soon as you can, and take the copy with you during future visits.
You can also check what is the name, if any available, to the style that you are comfortable with when your hair is done the right way. Check this name with the chief hairdresser so that there is no wrong info given to you. That is what I did when I found a particular hairdresser who did a good job. She wrote down the 'style' on the salon's card which I have kept in my purse for reference during future visits, even if that particular person is not on duty then!

'just a trim around the edges' will give you the appearance of a bowl cut. you know, like someone put a bowl on your head and cut around it.
you could say something like " one quarter of an inch off all over, please" or " i like what i have , just a bit shorter, please. about 1 inch off all over sounds good to me". a hairstylist might have a better idea of what you want (because stylists don't want to give you a bowl cut).
you could even say something like " i have a cowlick here and here and they like to stand up. i don't like it to stand up so keep it long enough to stay down". this would give the stylist SOMETHING to work with.
learn to open your mouth and explain what you do or don't like.
it's the ONLY way we know what you like (and don't like).
stay with the same stylist for a few cuts so she/he gets to know your hair and what it does (and won't do). it really can be difficult sometimes to do someone's hair for the first time - especially if the client doesn't specify what or how he typically wears it. (how long since last cut?)
if we (stylists) don't know you or your personality it can be up to us to do what we want if you don't tell us.

I had the same problem. Make sure your terms mean the same thing to them. Show them exactly how much you want off. If it's a new style, take a picture with you.

I think a lot of times they do what they think will look good on you - (or maybe what they are good that)
