I normally have no trouble with my media player but sometimes when I try to play a video a message pops up saying:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
Then I have the option to either close or go to web help
but web help is useless.
and the video wont work on real player or my other media players.
please help

you should try div x player if you havent got one and then if it doesnt work on that try quiktime and then i tunes, if it doesnt work on any of them then your file is incomplete.

It depends which WMP edition and version you are using. WMP 11 incorporates most of the later CODECS and can play most files.
It is possible that your file is corrupt and WMP cannot detect and report that fact.
One alternative is to browse for some video editing software and try converting the file to something bog standard like WMV. If that doesn't work I reckon the file is corrupt in some way.

on the assumption that the file isnt corrupted and its a codec problem, then instal "g spot" this will tell you exactly what codec was used.
then just download and install the right codec

it means what it says. it can't play the file. you could try getting the codec for the type of movie you are trying to play

search kazaa-lite codec pac. download the normal one, its free. this includes almost every known codec, and should in most cases solve it. you're right, web help is useless, and they actually paid a guy to write something long and useless, and microsoft could have just googled it.

You need what is called a CODEC. There are a lot of different ones. You can get a free set of them at :

i had windows mida player 10 and it did it all the time but now i got windows mida player 11 it dosent do it any more so get windows mida player 11 for free

the file is corrupt, i get this a lot with things that i download from shareaza. try downloading a different file.
