Murder is a sin that cannot be atoned for by Christ. One will have to do ones own redeeming. This is nearly impossible to understand as a human being. It will be a long and extremely painful process. There are many degrees of Heaven. Some lie far below others. Where one ends up is ultimately decided by the individual. Evil could not reside in the presence of God, nor would it want to.

Anyone who died before Jesus, did not go to heaven. Jesus was the first to ascend to heaven and only after that were a "little flock" of anointed Christians chosen to receive life in the heavenly Kingdom to rule with him as kings and priests over the earth. All those who did die before Jesus did, are still sleeping in death and are awaiting a resurrection back to life and will have the marvelous prospect of living forever. Since "the wages sin pays is death" those who committed murders and other bad acts may be resurrected also and will be judged to see whether they are worthy of everlasting life. The Bible tells us that there will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust, so those whom God feels worthy of a second chance, will receive one. This is proof of what a loving and merciful creator we have.

Barabas was the other prisoner who was released during the Passover instead of Jesus. Judas was the apostle who betrayed Jesus and later killed himself. u mixed it up.
Only God knows when a person repents sincerely coz he's the only one who can see through the heart. We are not in position to say who will be forgiven or not.

I did not read anywhere in the bible where Barabbas took his own life like Judas did. He could only enter heaven if he repented of sins and accepted Jesus as the Savior before he died.

It does not matter what they say, they have to be born-again.
If they have done that, they will go to heaven.
However it will not be the old man who went to heaven, it will be the new man.
Only those who have been born-again can understand the analogy of the old man / new man.
Even you can qualify to go to heaven if you have been born-again.

At the time I was a believer I would have said that God looks on the heart and so knows if there's been true repentance.

They don't even need to say they are sorry. They only need to be a part of the body of Christ. Chances are however, they went to their deaths denying our Lord as most people do.

It takes more than saying you're sorry, you have to accept jesus as your lord and savior, and believe in him. if they did that then yes, one sin is as great as any.
