Make the crate just large enough for the dog to lay down comfortably. Add at least one chew toy and let it out to eliminate frequently.

How long do you keep him in that cage? How many times a day, for how long each time, and how often do you walk him? Five times a day is good for an apartment dog? How many times do you go to the bathroom and do you do it on a schedule, or randomly? Why don't you keep the schedule you are asking this kid to keep to ( He's about 6 years old compared to us you know) and restrict yourself for a day or two? You might find it's quite difficult, can't always drink or eat when you want, etc. A dog can hold it one hour for each month old it is. But what if he has an infection of some kind, we get them right? What if he's eaten something bad, like part of a toy, or picked up some worms? Only tapeworms are visible in the poop. You might want to call your vet if you can't figure this out on your own.

You say he just started doing it. This seems strange, what I did when I first got my dog was sleep with a blanket, then put it in his cage. It smelled like me therefor he wouldn't poop on it, unless he was in there for too long. Keep his food and water in their with him so he knows it's his place. And if the crate is really large, block a section of it off so he doesn't have so much room to do his business. Puppies should be taken out every hour to avoid these little situations :)

the main things i can focus on are, the kennel can be to big for him, or he is not being brought often enough to do his business. I have a 6 month old german shepherd, he is now potty trained and doesnt require to be in his kennel anymore, but since the time we got him, and about 3 months old, he used the bathroom in his kennel. it didnt even matter if we brought him out every 2 hours which we were doing, almost every night we were bathing him and cleaning his kennel. he kennel was to large for him, when we switched to a smaller kennel, one just big enough to stand and turn around in, he was fine and wouldnt go in the cage, dogs dont want to mess their "bed". but if the area is too big and they can still make a mess and sleep on the other side of it, they will. an important factor also in kennel training is how often they are in their kennel. they need to know that when they come out of the kennel they are brought immediatly to the bathroom and thats where they do their business. when u arent playing with him, put him in his kennel. that way he knows thats his bed, if you say he just started doing it, has his foods been switched lately? that will make him have to go more often to the bathroom. if its something that seems to continue, try to RE-potty train him, taking food and water away at night, walking him every few hours. good luck

Assuming he is healthy, I would guess that one of two things is occurring: Either he is not being kept in the crate/cage regularly, or he is in a crate/cage that is too large. If he is not in a crate regularly, he will be confused when he IS there. If the crate is too large, he will not consider the entire crate to be his 'den,' and will use a part of it to relieve himself. Get a smaller crate if it's too big; be sure to put him in it on a predictable schedule. If none of those are the problem, get him to the vet to be checked; he could be having digestive issues that override his natural instincts to refrain from relieving himself in his den.

You are either leaving him in there for too long or the crate is too large. A crate should only be big enough for the dog to lie down and turn around comfortably.

feed him at the same time every day with dry food (never with raw meat its makes them horrible) and find out the time he poops then take him to a certain spot around that time every day and he should carry it on.

Try feeding him in there. Dogs generally don't want to poop where they eat. Hope this helps.
