You haven't specified what type or price range you're looking at.

for a compact camera-
I'd choose a Fuji F30 (or F31fd), or perhaps a Canon SD800IS.

Slightly larger- go with the Canon A710IS, or, for more features, the G7.

Although you might like a Panasonic FZ7.
Or Sony N2.

Or- you couldn't go wrong with a Canon 30D, Pentax K10D or Nikon D80.

There are a lot to choose from. There is no 'best'. Although the Fuji's are undoubtably the 'best' in low light (short of a DSLR).

For mr Nikon D50.... Just need to earn some money to get some better lenses....
