Every post on here is worded in a way that makes it seem like people don't really get anxiety disorders when they're younger it seems. I started having panic attacks at 12 and was staying awake for weeks at a stretch and then sleeping 24 hours at a time the next week since I was around 8. Some people are born with the mental disorders and they are in effect from the beginning. I didn't get any help until I was 15 because everyone thought it was "just hormones". Because hormones will make you so irrationally afraid that you decide to stay in your closet for a day because it's too dangerous outside of it. If it's interfering with your life or seems disproportionate to your friends stress and fear levels then don't have any qualms about seeking help. Mental illness does show signs of being genetic and at least for my family is obviously so. There isn't any other explanation for the fact that almost all my cousins have anxiety and depression issues. Don't let anyone tell you you're too young to be sick. It's what your feeling is a problem for you in everyday life speak up and actively pursue getting help. Good luck and Ihope you feel better soon.

The only person who can difinitively diagnose an anxiety disorder, honey, is a doctor or psychologist.
There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, and calling your mum and yourself mental will help nothing. As your mum has problems in this area, you're probably pre-disposed to a similar condition.
But rest assured, anxiety can be treated very effectively, and cured. I am currently recovering from an acute anxiety disorder, with a tendancy to catastrophic panic attacks. Key word: recovering. It can happen.
Talk to your mum, or someone else close to you, about getting yourself a diagnosis, and any help that you may need.
Good luck, love.

Anxiety disorder is really hard to diagnose. It's one of those problems that can take years to be discovered. At fourteen, I wouldn't worry about it. You're still growing up, there's still all the stresses of being a teenager, having to do school still, peer pressure, and just in general life. It's really easy to get stressed out about the littlest of things. I wouldn't worry about having any kind of mental disorders at your age, even if they run in your family. (You said your mum was mental, but that doesn't mean much to me because most people think that I'm mental.) If it bothers you that much, make an appointment with a general practitioner (that would be like your family doctor), and explain to him your fears. He won't laugh at you, I was so scared when I finally brought my stress issues up with my doctor that he would laugh at me, but he didn't. Your doctor will give you a really simple test, an unbiased test. Either he would ask you questions, or he will give you a quiz with multiple choice questions on it. I'm just going to tell you now, you are probably over reacting to the whole anxiety disorder thing, especially since internet quizes on the subject are known to be biased, or have non medical backing behind them. I wouldn't put all of my faith onto something I found on the internet.

First of all, are you using any illegal drugs? Most all will cause some form of anxiety, so stop if you are. Second if you have "all the symptoms" you just might. At 14 people have a certain amount of anxiety related to social/school/hormonal issues. If it interferes with your daily life, then go to a psychiatrist for an evaluation. Doesn't mean your"mental". They more you worry about whether you have it, the more anxiety you'll have. Millions have and deal with it everyday.

First calm down. What symptoms do you think you have? What disorder? Does your mom have that disorder? If so, there is a good chance that you might inherit it, BUT some disorders need a "trigger". Ask your mom to (or do it you yourself) research for a good psychologist with a lot of clinical experience, (one that specializes in that disorder) after doing research on the disorder that you are worried about. When you choose one, make sure you have a written list of questions you want answered ready to ask him/her. Ask a few psychologist those questions. Stick with the one who you think answers the questions the best, someone who specializes in that disorder. Then ask him/her about you and your symptoms. Proceed from there. The key thing here is to get a professional opinion.

Be careful in diagnosing yourself, and be especially careful when diagnosing yourself with a mental illness. there are a few good reasons why. First, when a particular word is used in mental illness it almost always has a very specific very narrowly defined meaning, it doesn't carry the same general meaning we use casually in a conversation. for instance depression doesn't mean sad in the diagnostic manual, it is narrowly defined to mean that for a period of so many months, very specific things have been going on. Second, symptoms of mental illness are always a matter of degree. Typically, the manual speaks of a symptom interfering with you carrying out every day activities like eating or holding a job.
Keep in mind that even trained professionals can't always determine the correct diagnosis of a patient.

Dear Matty,
Everyone from time to time is anxious. It does not mean you are "mental". However as a young man with a mother who may not be there for him since she is "mental" it may be a good idea to talk to someone about your fears. You mother's illness affects you and the family but that does not mean you are "mental". You may want to talk to the counselor at school a pastor or a teacher about this, its hard enough to be a teenager nowadays and everyone needs a like help now and then. Good luck to you and blessing for you and your mum.
