Hotel on the cheap but great location and fine rooms: La Quinta on 32nd Street. Other wise follow other suggestions. Two days here ?
Day one: Statue of Liberty on the way there visit the WTC, and Empire State building which is around the corner from LA Quinta.
Day two: 5th Avenue and Central Park South where the skating rink is, Grand Central Station at 42nd street.
Just a thought, also there is an inexpensive japanese buffet on the same street as the La Quinta.

Good luck and have fun !

Surprisingly, most of the people at the ball drop and anywhere near the Times Square area dont live in NYC. They are all tourists. Too many people and NO bathrooms. Although, the Marriott Millenium Marquis would have the best veiw.
