Go to the DVLA and ask to have your private plate put on retention, then the original plates put back on. when you purchase your new car go in with your retention certificate and new vehicle registration document(V10). This was always the way I went about it when I was a car salesman.

You don't leave your plate on the car, you take it. In most states you will held liable for anything the other perty does with the vehicle (i.e. accident or running someone over) until they get the Title transferred into their name. The best thing to do is to go with them to the D.M.V. and be sure they transfer the Title right away.

You take your tags to motor vehicles when you are registering your next car and ask them to just transfer the tags to your new car. People do it all the time.
