I also noticed a small amount of blood when I tried to clean it out, but I don't know if that's because I irritated it by putting a q-tip in it.

It's ok I've had it two. Your belly button is all red and sore and the odor smells really bad. It's a yeast infection. Antibiotics will cure it don't worry see your dr. for perscription....

You must have it irritated (even before the q-tip).

Unless, by any chance, any piercing is involved (in which case get to a doctor) clean the area only by running (or spraying) hot water into it.

You could place a small piece of sterile gauze in it to absorb the fluid and keep it dry.

I don't feel qualified to advise using any antibacterial creams or powders. You can use your own judgment (or the advice of, say, a nurse in your doctor's office) when it comes to whether you want to add an antibacterial cream (to fight germs and sooth the irritation), spray (to fight germs) or even a power (to keep it dry).

It could be an infection. Sometimes belly buttons can get slightly infected from moisture or other causes. I have heard of people getting a yeast infection in the belly button. See your doc.

If you've not had it pierced, you may need to see a Doctor before a serious infection sets in.
