I'm an atheist and I believe he died on the cross for everyone's sins....I just don't believe he was the son of god. So I get to go to heaven? What if I don't believe in heaven?....seems like a strange qualification for heaven to me, and one that is filled with holes.

I know it is a trite answer, but really read what John 3:16 says.... " ... so that those believing in him "
This doesn't mean that we worship Jesus. NO, it means that we put our belief in the fact that God sent his favored angel, the one called his FIRSTBORN, his SON, in order to 'balance out the scales' for the perfect life that Adam lost. This is why it is often called the Ransom Sacrifice. Adam lost his perfect life, and thus so did all mankind . Jesus, however, came to the earth, was born-lived-and-died as a perfect person, like Adam had been. However, Jesus did not falter as Adam had and so when he died a perfect man, he not only bought mankind a second chance, he also fulfilled the Mosaic Covenant ( the 10 commandments ). By believing in him ( not him as a GOD, as he is NOT a GOD, but as the son of God and accepting his great sacrifice in our behalf and thus devoting ourselves to God and to pursuing a lifestyle that imitates Christ's in its integrity,)we accept Jesus as our savior.
We must take in knowledge of him- and He that sent him, if we want to attain to the promise that Jesus gave to mankind when he was on the earth. That was the promise of a resurrection for the dead and a chance for mankind to live in a paradise earth, without Satan's influence, forever. This 'new kingdom' would be available to all of those who decide to worship God in truth and love. It would allow for the many all thru history who never got to hear of him, to learn of him and his righteous standards and to grow to love him. This new kingdom would bewithout satanic influence, as satan will not be there to bother people or influence them in anyway. There will be a short testing time, after a thousand years, and many will go with him, but only into destruction. Those that are loyal and want to serve god and live in a paradise earth forever, will be able to do so.
IF you want to ask me any questions about this, just email me. I would love to answer more for you or help you tounderstand why I believe this way.

I'm Jewish, but was raised Christian (I converted to Judaism about 10 years ago). It's implied in Jesus' prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane to a degree. However, most of it is the teachings of Paul, and subsequent teachings of the early Catholic church.
