First the doctor will take a very close look at the mole. Next they will see if there is any evidence of bleeding or secretion. Both of these are signs of possible malignancy.
If there is evidence to support carcinoma, they will send the patient to a specialist who will then either take the mole off or freeze it with liquid Nitrogen.
If the mole is taken off it is then put into a jar of formaldehyde and transported to the Histology lab, where it will be encased in wax and put on a device that shaves off very slim slithers at a time. Each slither is examined under a microscope and the report is sent back to the specialist and the doctor.

ok then i will be first with the mole jokes, a doctor does not treat moles a vet does, maybe not that funny, how about this one, i had a mole removed from my penis, the vet was furious, boom boom. on a serious note, my mum has just been through all this, a long series of tests biopsys and then a string of blood tests, she is fine now, there will be people in answer land who will slate me for poking fun at this issue, i made my mum laugh all the way through this terrible time, it also gave her hope as in her generation people died of various cancers on a regular basis, so a lesson for us all, laugh in the face of adversity

different moles do have different characteristics so an observation is usually enough.

If the doc has concerns they may remove the mole or take a selection of cells (biospsy) to observe futher. I should think that if it were cancerous, the cells within it would be stereotypical of a tumour which would be many of the same cells as tumours replicate cells at an abnormal rate

The doctor sends it to a pathology lab. The lab sections it (cuts it into very thin sections). They fix it and stain it and look at it on a microscope. Mole cells look a certain way and cancer cells look another way.

They just analyze the mole for cancer cells... it can be by microscope or by a chemical reaction

generally, they remove the mole and just send it to a lab
