Sir, you have asked about religion and believers. Religion is a code of life according to which society in which one lives, is transformed in such a way that human beings can spend their lives peacefully and without tension. When you say your prayers, (Christians go in churches, Muslim go in mosques, Hndu go in temples and also Sikhs go in Gurdawaras) they feel mentally sagtisfied. . During prayers their mind and heart directly relate to the teachings of religions. They feel satisfied after prayers and their heart is also free from tension of any kind. It thus goes to prove that religion is necessary to spend life according to the teaching of religions. Religion is thus necessary to tranform a society in beneficial ways.

There is only the need for one religion in the world, and that is the true one. However, many thousands of religions have come into the world Thur man's making and this has led to the true religion being harder and harder to find.
How to value a religion? By its works and deeds. Ask yourself some questions:
Do they put their God first, and others next and then themselves?
Do they show LOVE?
Do they disavow false religious teachings and stick firmly to what their religion ( i.e. Bible ) teaches them?
Do the practicers of this religion hurt other people?
Do they speak truthfully and honestly?
Are they able to back what they say about their religion with 'proof' , i.e. scriptures from the Bible that inform and teach such beliefs?
Do they preach one thing and practice another?
Are their teachings clear and understandable, not shadowed in mystery, mankind's theories or doctrines?

These are some of the questions I would use in determining if a religion had 'value' or not. There are so many in the world that practice things that one might not find of value, so being very discerning in your decision of which religion to study and perhaps, practice, is a very wise decision.

The encyclopedists take decades to value a religion and its believers, but their studies cannot offer an accurate result for humanity. Otherwise, many people might have accepted religion for the betterment of their lives.
A true religion is a divine school to provide its followers with perfect lessons to conduct a happy and decent living. In order to value a religion, we better read its Holy Books instead of watching its rituals and the behaviours of its believers. The Books reveal the essence and beauty of truth to the hearts, while formalities reflect only raw images.
In the past, people depend on preachers, now everybody can independently seek for the truth by himself. The Holy Books are readily available on the Internet.

I think that we all need some form of spirituality, but religion is not absolutely necessary, and can be very harmful. Many people don't understand that there is a tremendous difference between religion and spirituality. I think that the best way to evaluate any religion is on how broad minded they are. I would stay away from any religion that tells you that their way is the only true way, and that you will have to suffer eternal damnation or judgment or both, after you die, unless you adopt their religion as your own. Any religion that tells you that you must find your own true path, and they are there just to guide you and support you, is a good religion.

I don't think that religion is necessary as I am quite fine without religion and I know it is the same with many many other people. When I see that believers of a religion are generally good people and respect others this gives me a positive impression of the religion and its believers.

I use the same principal when choosing a mechanic, dentist or religion. My criteria are only two . 1. The person must be qualified (have the required knowledge) 2. The person must have my best interests at heart. Most religions do not fulfil these two basic requirements and frankly most do OK in saying they have infinite knowledge but only one says He loved us enough to die for us. For me... my two requirements are best met by the Christian God. As for is it necessary, I consider not having God to not qualify because there is no higher source of knowledge and a lack of comfort in not having somebody upstairs on your side.

You have to search for the truth and evaluate how logical its believes are. Even though belief by definition means acknowledging something that you cannot prove to yourself at that time. But you have to look at any part of the belief if there is any psychological pressure in coercing you to just believe now and watch later. You should have plenty of time for understanding before you accept. It should be your free choice based on logic of the faith.
Not all believers of any faith will act equally. Every faith has been having its share of mis-doers at all the times. If a faith makes logical sense but some adherent cannot keep up with it, then you have to accept it despite them if it makes logical sense to you.

Of course it is very necessary and compulsory.
If you don't believe in god, do you believe how could you live in this world? Who create the creatures and earth, sun and moon, hot and cold, wind and rain and etc...

Even you're not believer you can value them by respect each other and be good to them.
