If the files are from a database
you can use SQL Server Management Studio which allows you to open and modify MDS and MDF files
If the files are from a CD Image, then use ISOBuster

MDF and MDS are images of a certain CD or hard drive. They are used to play games without the need of an actual CD.
To open them you need to download Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools which is free. Once downloaded, install and create a virtual CD-ROM and then mount the MDF file into it. then open the virtual CD-ROM to see the contents of that file.

those are CD/DVD image files. you can rename them to filename.MDS to Filename.ISO to burn them in nero... you use the program Image Drive in Nero tools as long as you changed the Extension of the File to .nrg or .iso. The Nero Image drive that comes in Nero 7.0 or higher will allow you to use the ISO files without burning a CD or DVD. In order to change Extension if you can't do it for the file you will need to go to my computer on top of that window it will have Tools then folder options and then View tab and uncheck hide Extensions for known file types.
The MDF file is a Cue sheet for the program that created it. it usually a small file. And it not need for the info on top.

If there's multiple files.. Extract the 1st one only. (The rest will follow suite) If you cant open /extract them.. They could be Corrupt. (Which would require you to re-download them) Ask your friend whats going on as he created them. Hope it helps :)
