I doubt mint will make a big impact on smelly dog breath. The best way to get your dogs mouth as clean and fresh as possible for a carnivore that doesn't brush its teeth is to encourage lots of chewing.
Give your dog really difficult to chew things like roast joints and raw hides that work his back molars.
Chew scrubs the teeth up and if you get rid of the tartar the breath really improves.

Stop it eating poo.
It's breath will always smell to some extent.
None of the proprietry products really work.
Isn't wanting the dog to have fresh breath a bit anthropomorphic anyway?

Go to your local Pet Store and they should sell doggie snacks which will freshen his breath. The dog will love this because he'll think it is a treat. The one I use is called Talk to Me, which is a minty treat. There are also toys to help keep the dogs teeth clean and strong. They also have doggie toothpaste, but you said that might not be the best way to go.

if the breath smells bad it may be that he has a dental problem so I would take him to the vet for a check and descale as required. Then have a look at what you are feeding him. Stick to dry kibble as this helps keep his teeth tartar free. Raw carrots are vbery good as they help clean the teeth and sweeten the breath and aid in emtying anal glands too.

Our vet has found that brushing our dogs teeth helps prevent decay, bad breath and heart disease. Many groomers do it now regularly.
Mint won't do it. They need brushing. Also, rawhide chews and dentabones helps clean the dog's teeth. If you can, brush them, if not have the vet or groomer do it.

The bad breath comes from decay and can actually infect the heart after time.

There are a lot of things you can buy in a local store or especially a pet store. But my Ginger likes when I use a brush, a special brush just for her. With toothpaste....She lets me get in there and brush away.....much better breath.

I have two Pit_bulls and beleive me if you want to make their breath fresher , go to your favoite pet store and there are a variety of products that you can purchase for just that ONE reason. Try greenies, or any other mint flavored breath refreshers that they have, Robert Allen (navysvn).
