I have visited those countries as a tourist & i tell u it was a horrible place to be. Many are gypsies, thugs, criminals, prostitutes, drug smugglers, ..etc. In Italy & Spain , they run the show on criminal acts. If u want something illegal, u look for a Romanian to have it ,i.e drugs, a prostitute, false I.D., arranged beating or killing. In my street, one Romanian family had moved in & since then we have no peace. Our cars gets scratched , tires slached, our street became littered & playing all those loud gypsy music, day & night.

Geopolitically saying it was very wise. Not only Romania and Bulgaria need EU. EU needs them too.

EU wants to grow its surface. EU has been trying to build a counter-power against USA , China and Russia. There are many geopolitical dangers in the future.

Imagine that somebody will attack EU. The countries that will meet the first hit will be East European countries.

The gypsies and the criminals are only one small sacrifice. Remember the money that these countries received from EU for free. The scrached car is nothing comparing to the taxes you paid. A part of your own money left to these countries.

Please, remember Spain and Portugal how poor they were. Many efforts will be made to bring gypsies and criminals on the right road. Be optimistic.

But the expenses to build EU are nothing comparing to the power EU has now and EU will have.

Yup...I am a Romanian, u are right about those problems. It was not wise, because all those people u talk about will go in the EU to work...many who have university degrees will not leave Romania because there are plenty well payed jobs around. Only those people that have no education, work in construction will leave. Those problems u speak of are true, as a Romanian, I condemn those problems, but yet nobody does anything here to correct them...why? Corruption! Yes my car get scratched, even dented because many people are envious, yes there are prostitutes (50000 are said to be in Bucharest alone). If u visited u have seen the luxury cars here, those are bought with money from drugs, prostitution. Yes it is a horrible place yet Romania has it's wonderful places too. Maybe the EU can correct the numerous bad things here, but I doubt it because I've seen the comments on TV (everyone here thinks that they will steal the EU funds and so on). I think the EU should have waited 10-20 years...Bulgaria and Romania are the poorest and they will remain this way coz the political leaders want only money (in fact that's why they get elected...to steal).
Yes...Crashboy is right....the problems are related to gypsies... those are very dangerous people.

Well, i don't know how things are in Bulgaria, but i do know about Romania, because I live there.
To answer your question, no, it wasn't such a good idea to let Romania in the EU, because we still have a long way to go. It's a very corrupt country....
Second, the people that you speak of, those are not Romanians. Those are gypsies or people that want to be gypsies. They have been a plauge to the Romanian society since 1989. I wish they just be sent to an remote desert island and let to die of thirst and hunger!
The real Romanian is actually very kind and welcoming. I don't know if you have been to the country, but if your car brakes down, you will surely find a place to sleep and an warm plate of food, anywhere.
The gypsies, unfortunatly, went abroad to 'make money'... And that really destroys our image, which wasn't that good to start with... I don't know why they are let out of the country...
So, i have one request on behalf of all of us real Romanian: if you see a gypsie or a criminal, or something, please remember: he is not a Romanian, he s a gypsie.

Funny, many people across Europe wonder if it was wise letting the UK join, given our generally obstructionist attitude!

Personally, I feel that Romania and Bulgaria aren't quite ready yet, but they'll catch up soon enough. People forget how poor and messed up Portugal and Spain wee when they joined.

Someone above says that Gypsies have been a plague on Romania since 1989 - that's not quite accurate. What he means is that the situation became known across Europe then. Gypsies have lived there for hundreds of years, they were bought and sold as slavesin the 19th century. Check

They have suffered gross discrimination, and Gypsies were sent to Auschwitz along with Jews.

Romania has big social problems, especially with Gypsies, we have to hope that the opening to Europe will help resolve these problems.

Unfortunately, the attitudes expressed by Romanians blaming Gypsies for giving them a bad name are not a good sign.

Dude have you been to Bulgaria? You described Romania. Bulgaria is poor and dirty, but it is much better than Romania. I think it is a good idea as the EU should help us, not let us destroy our nation. We need help with all of the corruption. But I believe the EU can help and I hope they do.

So you want to base this EU move on the experience you have with one bad neighbour, a lousy holiday, and a load of prejudices you have built up since acquiring your new neighbour? If you went to heaven, you would probably find it the same as you did in Romania - think about it.
