I'm re-building an old PC here (about 144MB RAM 800MHz). I can't make up my mind whether I should install Windows98SE instead.

At first I was quite pleased with the look of ME but started to get a bit worried when I was playing Spider Solitaire on it, it was unbearably slow and getting progressively slower especially when dealing a new set of cards. I recently re-built another PC with just 128RAM 266MHz with Windows98SE on, it's not as slow. I'm concerned that there might be problems later on with other applications with ME.

I have re-installed SpiderSolitaire (at first slightly faster) and also allocated fixed different values (at each test) to the virtual memory to speed up the PC. It didn't help much.

Upgrading it to XP is out of the question so I have to choose either ME or Win98SE. If anyone has positve experience with Win ME and know the benefits it has over Win98SE, pls advise, thanx

Windows ME works but it was not worth the money that M$ asked for. It was still unstable. But the only plus side to the Windows ME O/S was faster startups and system restore was the only diffrence but windows 98 98se and ME are now abandonware (unsupported) list since july of 2006.... I recommend getting the Updates for the O/s from 3rd party websites..

Heres a Tip if your running windows 98 98Se with a FAT32 filesystem... Get the defragment program from a windows ME computer and put it on the 98 98Se computer and it will defragment alot faster.

Personally with that architecture , I would go for Win 2K Pro, it is basically XP without the extra bits. XP is only for 1GHz and above computers, it doesn't run right on anything slower or anything with less than 256Mb of memory. ME is not too bad but it is one of the least stable products that Microsoft has ever released, 98SE is ok but has some compatibility problems with some of the newer peripherals. I'd say 2K Pro is your one, will work with that machines spec and works with most of the modern bits and pieces such as Net Cards, USB stuff and Graphics Boards, also there is still Tech Support from Microsoft for 2K and they have disowned ME and 98SE (No longer support it). Hope this helps

Why install windows 98 SE again or ME, there are too many free systems based on Linux, I mean distros, those systems don't use too much ram, you can download an then burn the distro into a CD when you do this you are able to install the system on your PC, I recommend to you ubuntu is very nice.
