Every night (or should I say morning), I fall asleep sometime between 3:00am and 5:00am, and do not wake up until about 1pm that day. On the days I work, I'm completely miserable with sleepiness. Once in awhile I'll fall asleep at a very decent hour but only to wake up at about 1am for it to repeat itself. Anybody have any effective tips that don't involve drugs?

There are many things I have tried that helped, but I finally did have to get medication as not sleeping was hurting my health.

Any kind of "white noise" will help. They have machines that give white noise, but a fan works well also. It is soothing and blocks out other noises.

You can train yourself to sleep only in bed. This means no TV watching or reading in bed. I know that is hard, but it can work.

Watch your caffeine intake. I had a good friend who had trouble sleeping. I suggested she cut down on coffee and she said that caffeine did not affect her. Well something obviously was and I thought that was worth a try.

Some physical exercise during the day helps. If you exercise too close to bed time you will not be able to sleep, but do some exercise earlier during the day. Walking is good and the fresh air helps.

For awhile, it helped me to think about something while trying to sleep. Make sure you don't think about work or what you have to do, etc. I used to take different peoples houses and imagine how I would completely redecorate them. This helped because I did not think of things that would keep me awake. I know it sounds odd, but it did help me.

If you do not want to take medication (I agree that this is not the best idea), then try any suggestion that someone gives you and see if it can work. Something may work and a combination of things may work for you.

Good luck.

Yes,
BUT...it is 5:15 am here in Indianapolis so take this with a grain of salt...
I have been up since 4am. I have done a lot of work this morning around the house. I went to bed about 11pm and when I woke up, I am staying up. I will NOT be taking a nap today ( I often do) nor will I frontload with Caffine.
I will be going to bed about 9pm tonight and then, hopefully I will sleep a little later then 5 hours.

I ate nothing past 5pm yesterday. I hope this contributes

Good Night....I mean, Good morning

I have the same problem, and it's usually caused by stress and an over-active mind. I've tried the sleepy-time teas. They do work, but then you have to pee later. I tried Aluna, which worked but smells horrible. Someone at work suggested Tylenol PM. It really works! I don't take it very often, just when I'm going through a bout of sleeplessness. I know it's a drug, but exercise is stimulating, so I don't suggest that and white noise drives me nuts and makes me even more awake. Try some of the suggestions given by the people, they might work for you.

Your brain is not active enough for you to be tired enough to fall alseep. It is 2:17am where I live and I'm still not asleep...

I would suggest metally challenging games or activities like math or puzzles. I would also suggest (if it's not crazy cold where you are) to go for a run/jog/walk every night/morning maybe two times a day... this will help.

You might try working out. Do some good exercises after you get home from work. Say for an hour. Make sure you are not drinking any soft drinks with caffeine, tea, and chocolate have lots of caffeine too.

you are having some stress and worries subconsciously.

find a time to sit down and reflect on the worries which are troubling you.

if the worries are complex, try to focus one worry each time and find a moderate solution for it 1st. 1 way is by asking questions in yahoo answers.

if you are lucky enough, you might solve 1 worry step by step.

else, you need to find a physciatrist and/or counsellor for help.

wish you good luck in the new year!

SOUNDS LIKE ANSOMNIA BUT BEFORE I DID ANYTHING I WOULD CHECK WITH MY DOCTOR IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT AGE YOU ARE YOU SHOULD STILL BE ABLE TO SLEEP THRU THE NIGHT AND GO TO SLEEP AT A DECENT HOUR CHECK WITH THE DOCTOR THIS COULD CAUSE YOU SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS IN THE LONG RUN IF YOU DON'T YOU NEED YOUR REST.

I think so the most effective way is through meditation/yoga. You should sit on your bed with your legs crossed & placed horizontally & ur palm resting your knees. close your eyes & take deep breaths for 5-10 minutes. it works for me.
