after all, why not? they can shoot a gun just as well as you or I, but then again do you really want to be bunkered down in the trenches, small arms fire ringing around your ears, and then you got Bob next to you saying 'Dont you think my watch goes fabulously with my beret?'

The military is an equal opportunity employer. Anyone who can pass the physicals and the mental aptitude tests are welcome to join...provided, if they are gay, they keep that information to themselves. Remember, "Don't ask, don't tell."

I served with a number of gays and lesbians. Did it matter? Not in the least. They did their jobs just as well as the next person. I say let them serve their country, as long as they are capable of properly performing the job, what's the problem?

Although I detect the sarcasm in your comment, the facts is No the military does not encourage Gays to join.

However should the individual joining be gay and not openly express their sexuality or act on their sexual urges (or at least not get caught) then there is nothing preventing them from serving.

Personally I believe anyone willing to fight for his or her country should have that right, millions of Americans have died for this country and a large number of them were probably homosexual. Why shouldn't they have the right to defend and fight for what they believe in.

Granted coming from a military family, I know it is a very uncomfortable thing for many people, so despite my views, I know it maybe a long time before they are openly welcome to serve.

I think everyones personal life should stay personal, if it wasn't supposed to be that way, it would be called a public life. The US. military just sets that standard with the "don't ask, don't tell" rule. Good for them!

The military doesn't aggressively recruit gays, but if they want to join, that is ok, because at the rate soldiers are being killed, they need replacements fast. That is what the military instituted the "don't as, don't tell" policy.

Having served in the Military, I can tell you that there are many gay and lesbian soldiers/sailor/airman/marines. I didn't mind, most don't. Provided they didn't make comments in the shower and did their job, no one really cared. And it would be ascot, watches usually don't need to match....unless it's a formal occasion.

This is ridiculous. No, the Army does not encourage gays to join. Ever heard of "Don't ask don't tell"? That means they can't ask you if you're gay, and if you are gay, you better not say anything, or you will get kicked out.

Actualy, it's illegal for gays to join the US military. I don't know why, after a long day of fighting and watching my friends die all around me, I think I would need a hug.

He'd be no more interested in your sorry @$$ than you would be in the woman next to you.

You've obviously never been in a combat situation so just stuff your dumb@$$ remarks where the sun doesn't shine.

Have you served? You'd be surprised how many closet gays there are in the military. And your stereotyping of them is inappropriate.
