I think you are indeed silly. In all of my 25 years owning dogs, showing dogs, grooming other people's dogs, and doing rescue, I have only ever been bitten once in an unprovoked attack. Once again it was the owner's fault.
Your attitude makes me sad that you don't understand dogs nor the pleasure in having a dog and if you ever have children, they too will grow up to fear dogs.
Besides, it was reported that the attack happened at 4am. I wonder, what was a 4 year old child doing out of bed at 4am and where was the grandmother when it happened. Nobody knows if the child had been allowed to torment the dog who was already stressed by fireworks.
I get really angry when people say that their dog is so good around kids that they can pull its tail, sit on its back and it doesn't miind. One day it MIGHT mind being hurt and that will lead to a bite. The family sound like a bunch of chavs, living on a council estate, the mother leaving the little girl while she goes out on the lash and the son owning a pitbull type because it is macho and not having what it takes to properly control the dog. It was an accident waiting to happen.
The laws exist to put to sleep any unregistered pitbulls and pitbull types but the police do nothing. There are adverts all over the place selling pitbull cross puppies or Irish staffs as they are also now known, but the laws are simply not enforced. How many deaths will it take for the laws to be taken seriously?

Have you ever watched a guide dog working with its blind owner or a hearing dog for the deaf working with its deaf owner? and what about dogs who help people with a disability, would you have these dogs destroyed as well? they have given their owners confidence to go out in the world again and lead a normal life again, what about dogs that can detect cancer? would you have the dog that could help YOU one day destroyed? You don't know much about dogs do you? or wolves come to that! Wolves are very timid creatures who kill other mammals in order to live, they do not attack humans and if they do then THEY HAVE BEEN PROVOKED!!!
This terrible tragedy could have been prevented, the dog was already known to be aggressive so should have been put to sleep 7 months ago, and by all accounts it had also attacked a man walking past the garden so that's 2 attacks it got away with, I hope that the law does the right thing and prosecutes (even imprisons) the 23 year old idiot who owned the dog!

Obviously you don't have dogs...PLEASE tell me someone so stupid has not reproduced yet either.....
The dog owners are probably pretty upset because they had to have a member of their family put down, because the neighbouring parents are negligent in watching where their own kids are. If you are a responsible parent you teach your dumb@ss kid to avoid strange humans AND strange animals.
Have you ever heard of two siblings that hit and bite each other? Toddlers ALSO have a formidable array of teeth, just the thing for ripping into a younger brother or sister....
To be clear siblings are descendants of wild cavemen, bred to look cuddly, but cavemen descendants nonetheless.
THIS being so, do you advocate destroying all bigger brothers or sisters that fight or bite? (As a parent of two teenagers I do).
This is a tragedy. The dog(s) were wrong and have paid the price. The dog's owners should go to jail. BUT the kid was wrong and paid the price. The kids' parent were negligent as well and should go to jail for child endangerment.

Don't think all dogs or any dogs for that matter should be destroyed. I do think that if a dog bites some one or attacks some one and that dog is not a police dog attacking in the line of duty they should be put down. Dogs can be good companions, watchdogs, family pets, working dogs, seeing eye dogs, the list goes on and on. Dogs have made some really good contributions to society, you point out a child killed by a dog. Although that is tragic and our hearts go out to that family. dogs have also rescued people,& children&, protected owners against wild animals, robbers. Dogs have also alerted owners as well as strangers to burning houses. Dogs have accompained men to the most desolate and trecrous taraine such as the artic explores and there sled dogs. If you really think about it the good that dogs do and have done far out weighs the bad, you don't have to love dogs to agree that there history of work, and there contriubutions are to respected!

If you look at the statistics, only around 25 people are killed every year by dogs. Dogs total. You're only twice as likely to be killed by a dog as compared to choking on a toothbrush. (credit for this piece from starcatdazzler, from a different question) And with an estimated 52 MILLION dogs living with families in the USA ALONE.. if you look at it compared the 25 dogs that kill chances are unlikely, and again i remind you the 52 million was just in the USA, the 25 was around the world.

I think I must be insane ,then because I have 6 of the horrid beasts!!! Seriously, not all dogs are dangerous, just like all people are not murderers. It's unfortunate about the little girl.Where did this happen? I haven't heard it.People must be very watchful with kids and dogs.I wouldn't trust ANY dog to be left alone with a child, because both are unpredictable.Unfortunately,a lot of people think that their children are blameless, when in fact, many dog attacks are provoked by kids.I'm not saying the child deserved to be killed, but do we know if the parents left her alone with the dog,and what breed was it? I don't think all dogs and wolves need to be destroyed,That's just silly. What about seeing -eye dogs, dogs for the deaf, therapy dogs, and police dogs? And the millions of wonderful family pets? All dogs aren't bad, just as all people aren't.
Update: I've just read this. What do you think now?

It's the idiots on this site that wreck it for other people!!!!!!
If we are going to do by your reckoning how about we kill all humans too as there seem to be some pretty nasty ones of those out there- hey they even have the ordacity to think about what they are doing and plot to kill!
You idiot! Dogs are no worse than people in fact people are far more dangerous! Its the owners that need to be sorted out to make sure they do not train their dogs to be dangerous and agressive!!
Ps- did you realise tht 'harmless and loving dog' had a council warning over its previous behaviour to neighbours and other dogs!

The child that was killed on New Years Day was not killed by a "harmless and loving dog".
She was killed by a dog that was KNOWN to be vicious, that she'd been left UNSUPERVISED with. Children and dogs are notoriously bad at reading each other's body language and therefore need supervision around ANY dog.
Maybe if you got your facts straight I could respect your point.

Dogs, just like their owners and their reasons for keeping them. are all very different. Vicious and aggressive dogs are kept by people who want to come across as being so much more vicious and aggressive, reflecting the antisocial behaviour popularised by Gangster Rap and other mindless appeals to the unfortunate group in society who reject all pretence of aspiring beyond the sh1thole they have found themselves in. They will never learn unfortunately because education is not required for the people at the bottom who can be blamed for all of society's ills. So they will continue to bear and bring up children who will be abused, scalded, run over and yes, killed by the family pet.
Of course, in Champagne's world where pit bull terriers are banned the little girl didn't die.

No I do not agree with your opinion dogs can be wonderful. But lets switch this what about us? If you think a species should be executed because their is a rare attack here or there what should happend to us??? If you think about it we are the species that creates more problems than anything else. So before you go trying to execute our dogs think about executing certain people. Like the majority of chil rapes are??? we know who they are maybe that RACE shoule be executed dont YOU think so??? Do us all a favor, dont make a general assumption due to rare consequences. Yes dogs have teeth but humans have worse. Think about it.
