Chances are, she's in a bit of pain.

The surgery is actually pretty simple. It's a lot like when a cat gets declawed, and lots of breeders will have their puppies "de-dewclawed" before selling them to a family. The surgery is going to require anestesia which can get pricey and probably some mild pain medication sent home for a few days following the surgery. A bandage will be necessary to assure the paws are healing properly. Remember, they're open wounds.

If you're worried about your dog chewing off the bandages, ask your vet about a product called "BanGuard" or "Yuck". These are creams that are spread on the outside of the bandage and are horrible to the taste (trust me, I know). It helps prevent the dog from licking the paws. Another option would be an "E-Collar" (Elizabethian Collar). Those are those lamp shade, flying saucer like collars they put on dogs after they have surgery. That may also help prevent the dog from licking its feet.

I hope this was helpful for you! Good luck!

if she has ripped both of her dewclaws yes it's very painful, just like you tearing a nail way back on your finger. and yes you should have them removed if this is going to be a constant problem for her. she will need to wear bandages to keep her from chewing and getting them infected. have the vet send her home with an e-collar, they can be a pain, but it's only for a short time and much better than her constantly ripping them off. are you keeping her nails trimmed short? this could help the problem if you don't want to do the surgery.

It's NO BIG DEAL!!!

Takes more time for PREP than the actual surgery! A *GIGANTIC* 1/4 INCH incision! Can be GLUED,not even need sutures.

sheeeeeesh.....
