First of all, most people as little children are taught to believe in a god. Second, god-believing is a comfort to most people, and offers relief from distress and from the unalterable fact that we all will die some day. Third, every human is inclined to superstition; this is because every human is trained to see patterns in everything even if there is no pattern, only chance. That sums it up in a nutshell: religion is spread and confirmed by manipulation, wishful thinking, and delusion.

"Most said they don't believe in god?" Go back and count again--the margin of difference is pretty slim. That said? People believe in God (and have done so over millennia) for a variety of reasons. Part of it is culture--if you're born into a family who believes, you are more likely (though by no means guaranteed) to believe. Part of it is psychology--we're more comfortable if we imagine a big, powerful parental figure taking care of us. Part of it is experience--a lot of people have things happen to them in this life that just don't make sense unless God is involved. Does it matter?

I've sat here for awhile trying to summarize, and find that this question is so BIG that it would be hard to put this in one place.
Just a few thoughts here, although my fingers would be typed down to nubs and I'd spend all night replying to why I believe in God.
First of all, central to belief in God is belief in the Bible. The Bible is our central source for finding who God is.
--The Bible was written over a period of 1500 years by over 40 authors from every walk of life in 3 languages on 3 continents and includes hundreds of controversial subjects, yet it is written with harmony and continuity from Genesis to Revelation. Was this by chance?
--The Bible is the most-read book of all time and has been published in more languages than any other book. Why?
--The Bible has survived through time, persecution, and criticism. How could this happen?
--Archaelogical finds attest to the accuracy of events and dates contained in the Bible.
--Modern studies constantly prove that the advice contained in the Bible leads to happier families and a better country. For instance, wouldn't America be better w/o murder, w/o stealing, w/o divided families?
If people admit that there is a God, then they have to see that they have a responsibility towards Him in the way they live, and people do not want to admit that.
Well, I could go on and on here but I suspect you might have already stopped reading. If you are honestly interested I would recommend reading the Bible, attending church, or possibly checking out your local library for books by Josh McDowell. He began research years ago to write a book to prove the Bible was not true but ended up believing it after careful research. I would urge you to be informed before making a decision on something so terribly important.

What do you mean by most? Does 6 billion people minus 1.5 billion Christians, 1 billion Muslims, and around 1 billion of Hindus and other religions who do believe in God means "most" to you?
Besides, one person besides God is a majority!

Religion's main sales point is that you can get a second chance at life and they know that people will fall for it and that they can't come back to complain that there is nothing there.

some do believe, some don't but pretend it for social, political or business reasons and some hedge their bets, in case they die and find their souls on the way to hell.

Saves them money to believe in God. Otherwise they'd have to numb their pain with vodka. And vodka ain't cheap.
