I can't even remember the last time I tried (sometime in grade school), but I know I didn't do so hot. I just realized that at basic training this will probably not be good. Will I be able to do it after all the hard work and training in basic training, or will I be sent packing if I am in fact unable to. I don't give up easily, and am a determined person, for what it's worth. Thank you.

Climbing a rope is not solely about strength, but more about technique. I've seen Marines so worn down they could barely lift their arms, yet with the right technique, they effectively climbed a rope all the way to the top. Your Drill Instructors will show you how to do it. Just be patient and don't give up, its possible. You'll be amazed how quick you get up there when someone is yelling and threatning to kick your a** if you don't make it.

Climbing a rope is easy and hardly requires any upper-body strength at all. All you have to do is wrap one foot (preferably your dominant foot) around the rope, and use your feet to push you up. At the same time pull down with your arms. Once you get that down, you will be able to climb like a monkey.

They will teach you. Don't sweat the small stuff! I never climbed a rope until I got to boot camp and I became very good at it. Your recruiter should be able to show you the little trick of using your feet to help you climb the rope before you leave for boot camp, If not your D.I. will teach you in boot camp. Good luck and don't sweat the small stuff.

You'd better start practicing now. It takes a lot of time to develop that upper body strength. At Basic, your life can be much harder if you cannot pass physical.
