I have spoken with people who say that it's pointless to try to keep our green and beautiful planet from being ravaged by the greedy and heartless.

They have told me that it's not a good investment of my energy, because Jesus is right around the corner and he will make everything new and clean again.

*roll eyes*

They are looking forward so much to getting to "Heaven" that they don't realize that Heaven has been our address all along.

Save the Earth. It's the only planet with chocolate.

They do if they are Jehovah's Witnesses. Fortunately, they've got it wrong. In fact, they've been falsely predicting the "end of this system of things" since before 1914. My father, born at the start of the last century, was utterly convinced he would live to see Armageddon. He died a disappointed man.

Regardless of "end-time" matters, everyone should be doing their level best to help solve what problems we can, especially when it comes to helping other people. We cannot absolve responsibility for our actions. No-one can predict when God will step in to put an end to evil and injustice - all we can do is live each day like it was going to happen tomorrow and put our faith and trust in God's word.

Some christians put more emphasis on the next life than this one. But the Bible has much more to say about this life than the next. I don't believe life is just a test to see if you are good enuf for heaven. No one will ever be good enuf for heaven.Life is a journey and Jesus helps us along that journey. My preacher once said that some christians are so heavenly minded they are no earthly good. There's a lot of truth in that.

Yes, I suspect so. I was brought up in an end-time sect, and the congregation was full of the most pathetic, no-life lame ducks imaginable. The appeal seemed to be that no matter how much of a failure you were in your career and social life, it didn't matter, as it was all going to end soon anyway. In fact, you weren't a pathetic non-entity at all, you were one of the elite, the chosen few that were 'in the know'!
Of course, to keep this going meant a complete re-write of their theology and prophesies, every time an end date came and went with everyone embarrassingly still here. But that didn't seem to bother them much!

I look at it as a way that we can wipe the slate clean and start again. I think if we ever leave this festering rock that we might just learn from our mistakes and fix some of the problems we have created here.

Yes.I became a born-again Christian and I lasted only a few months because of this problem. They know everything about the "antichrist"etc.,but they seem to ignore most of G-d's rules for living, such as minding your own business, not forming cliques to exclude others and not being racist/predjudiced.They fail to deal with their own problems and continually point out others' problems while being obsessed with the "end of the world"!
DAMN THEIR EYES! DAMN THEIR BREEKS! DAMN THEM TO OLD EDINBURGH TOWN!

Yes. Many miss out on life. They think the only reason they are here is to die and go to heaven. Life, our reason for being here is so much more than that. You are not born to spend your entire life looking toward the eastern sky waiting for god to come back. Of course most of those people essentially ignore the teachings of Jesus and just go with the idea that he was born to die for our sins. His life was about so much more than that.

essentially, eschatology or messianism demonstrates an incommensurability between the power of one's god demonstrates physically, and the power of one's god demonstrated through word. to demonstrate: in early judaism there was no doctrine of the end times and no messiah either. that was because, for the jews, god was ever present and appeared to win battles for them. they didn't even believe in heaven or hell or an afterlife.

after the jewish state was destroyed as an independent entity, belief in an afterlife sprung up as well as eschatology ( a belief in the 'end time' or 'last days'). this was because god was no longer appearing to people and their position in life was not powerful. christianity arose out of this environment, and eschatology was a response and a challenge to the earthly power of the emperor of rome: yes, you may be powerful now, but we will get our reward in the last days and the afterlife.

funny how psychology plays a huge role in religion, and also power. you just don't get perspective on religion until you're out of it...
