Astronauts have been to the moon already.
I don't know if God was waiting, but I happen to believe God is everywhere, so He was there as much as He is here.

God is spirit so there is no where that he is not. He is everywhere at the same time and he is "waiting" within the hearts and minds of men but the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehends it not.
