There's no such thing as a free lunch.
Unfortunately, you will have to pay. You can purchase the cheaper upgrade rather than the full version and save some money, though.

Considering you have to pay $99 to upgrade to XP Pro, I don't see why you'd think you could pass over it and upgrade to Vista for free.
Microsoft has never provided free upgrades to new versions of Windows. With their monopoly on desktop computers, everyone just gets to pay each time they make a new Windows, and stop giving customer support to the old ones. Or suffer with outdated computers that can't run the latest software. Or ditch Windows entirely.

if you purchased your computer within the last 30 days, you had the option of getting a windows vista upgrade certificate which you could mail away for a free copy of windows vista - minus $30 for ship/handling. otherwise plan on paying at a minimum $199 for the upgrade and $299 for full version... there are talks about a $399 for premium edition.

There are 5 editions:
Vista Starter - (not for sale, included in basic computers where people dont know how a computer works)
Vista Home Basic
Vista Home Premium
Vista Business
Vista Ultimate - there will be no upgrade option for this
-------------
You cannot have a free upgrade unless it has come when you bought your computer.
Most computers bought before October (not sure if it's october)
are not eligible for the upgrade. Most free upgrades come from the computer's manufacturers.

No the upgrade is not free unless you got a certificate with a computer you purchased in the past few months. Vista is around $100-200 to upgrade to a home edition but your system needs pretty good specs. Go to this link to see if your system will run vista( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx ) It comes out Jan 30, 2007 for general public(its already out for buisnesses)

You will have to pay. However, I would not rush to upgrade to Vista. I personally will wait 6 months or so until most of the early bugs are worked out.

You will pay more than you've ever had to pay for an operating system. I prefer http://www.ubuntu.com as it's free.
