have you ever tried painting with Acrylics over crumpled rice paper. Tissue paper can be used if rice paper isnt available. You crumple it then straighten back out and use a medium like Jo Sonja's clear glaze medium to apply the paper to the surface you want to paint. Leave some of the creases in. I have done this on doors and jewel boxes and many other things. Once the paper is dry, you then paint with watered down acrylic paint to give a wishy washy appearance. It also looks great blending the colours together. Don't be afraid to water the paint down a lot as that is the idea.

as acrylic is matte when it dries try going over certain parts with varnish (special acrylic ones exist....)..like another guy said work fast and dont go over something already painted... (if you wanna layer slowly invest in oil paints)...and if ever you get some on your clothes wash it off immediatly!
