I've known this guy for about 5 years off and on we kept in conact though the years. Now he says that he is ready to settle down with someone and he is telling me that when he moves out from his parents home and gets his own place he will give me a key and wants me to come over and do things like a girlfriend would. But then he gives me mixed signals that throw me off like telling me about his future dreams that they may include me if we become serious. But isn't giving someone the keys to your apartment serious. I want to be serious with him but I don't know what the right approach is without making him feel uneasy.

The time to tell him that is AFTER he's moved out of his parent's house and into his own space, which he has to support on his own. Until that time, you'll never know whether or not he can be responsible enough to be a good roomate, let alone mutually exclusive. The other side of this is, there are never any guarantees that just because YOU want to be monogamous, he'll follow suit...it's simply wishful thinking on your part; and if he doesn't adhere to your atandards, don't blame him...it's not his choice, but your suggestion!

Honestly tell him how you feel. Once they start including you into their future they are more than ready to be serious with you. I think this could be a good thing.

First of all...after 5 years of knowing each other, I would hope that you would feel comfortable enough with him to talk openly about anything. Second, why is he still living with his parents? (unless he is 18 or in college....that is not a good sign that he is responsible) And....if you are both that young.....don't focus on long term commitment at such a young age...you don't even know yourself when you are that young.

If he's already making comments about the future which include you, I think it's pretty safe to say that he's ready for an "exclusive" relationship.

JUST BECAUSE HE GIVES YOU A KEY DOSENT MEAN SERIOUS HE MAY TELL A DOZEN GIRLS THE SAME THING. UNTIL YOU AND HE SIT DOWN AND MAKE A COMMITMENT TO BE TOGATHER THEN YOU WILL NEVER KNOW IT SHOULDNT MAKE HIM UNEASEY UNLESS HE HAS OTHER PLANS!

Best approach - be honest and open. Ask him where you are at.
