I think they mean like a kid who fears his overly strict, compulsive, and egotistical father.

Okay Dude, I do not fear G-D at all, I only feel bad inside if I know I am being wrong in some way. My conscience bothers me and I then am truly sorry for disappointing him. It is kind of like your parents, you know? If I had to fear G-D then I would be evil, and I am not evil. So I love him forever just like I do my parents. It is unconditional love, and if all of these people out there would realize it they could lighten up a little and realize they are only hurting themselves, and if there was such a tyrant in heaven like they fear than they must believe in the Devil, right? Happy New Year

Put in context, the Bible tells you not to fear Satan, he can only kill the body. But fear God as He can kill the soul.
The way I read it - Don't be afraid of things that happen in this world. But honor and respect God, don't take Him for granted, He has the power to give life or death. Death is separation from God. Those that choose to ignore God, take Him for granted will suffer an eternal death - Hell.

Love can only be used as a reward. There has to be fear of punishment. Eternal suffering it the ultimate punishment and fear is the perfect tool for control.

in the original context to fear god is to take him & his warnings seriously & giving him the respect due . god has some pretty heavy warnings because he really loves YOU* and really wants YOU* to share heaven with him.
i love my kids , therefore if i see them in a dangerous situation i'm gonna do some loud growling because i want them to be alive & i don't want them to be in that situation again .
( * you := yourself and every individual person )
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack, concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

because it shows that the person is very obedient to the will of God and is upright and pious, which is seen as something good usually. personally though, I think that "god-fearing" being a good thing is very ironic in our society

God fearing means that acknowledging his existence and his power. We cannot even comprehend the extent of his power and what he is capable of doing. It also means to respect.

Because god is simply an extension of your own morales... People just replace "I Think this" with "god thinks this" it makes them feel more significant...
