It's a long difficult process. It took my husband (from new zealand) a total of 7 years from start to finish to gain US citizenship. Some people have waited 10 years. We were on top of every detail, submitted all paperwork immediatly and I researched exhaustively. It was extremely annoying. Government red tape always is.

visajourney.com is helpful... britishexpats.com is good too (it is not all british)

Get engaged, fill out the application for a K-1 fiancee visa, and go to the embassy with him. He waits for the visa and then enters the US, presenting his valid passport and K-1 non-immigrant visa. He tells the freaking truth to the Inspector: he's coming to get married.

You meet him and get married within 90 days.

Then you take you marriage documents with his visa, etc to the CIS office and get him a temporary Green Card (I-551). He will get his permanent I-551 in 3-6 months. After a few years, he'll be able to lift the restrictions on his Green Card and be safe from you divorcing him and getting him kicked out of the country. A few years later he can apply for US Citizenship.

Talk to the INS. THey have all the rules and regulations. They are most worried about convenience marriages for the sake of getting citizenship or a greencard. If the two of you are legitimatly in love and legitimately getting married there should be no problem.
