I have a full-size head board that I want to "re-do". It's maple and has a very light finish. I'm thinking of distressing it, painting it, covering it, etc. Any suggestions you have for websites with ideas and "how-to" tips or your own ideas would be great! Thanks!!

How you should go about redoing your headboard depends to a great extent on the style of your room, how much money you want to invest in this project, and how much time you want to devote to it.

If you decide to paint it, either plain or a decorative painting technique, the headboard will have to be sanded and primed before you can apply your chosen paint(s). Although not difficult, this can be time-consuming especially if there are any details to the style of the headboard like mouldings or other things that make sanding a challenge.

Covering a headboard is very easy. Purchase some quilt batting (Walmart tends to be the cheapest for this), and some fabric that will match your decor. The only other supplies you need are a good staple gun and staples. Staple on the quilt batting (you might want a double thickness), then staple on the fabric. Done. And if ever you want to go back to the wood, you just have to pull off the fabric and all the staple marks should be on the back of the headboard so no one would ever know.

Good luck!

Depends on how "handy" you are and what its made out of. Press board, ply wood, whole wood, etc.

If you have a 'theme' to your room (leaves, footballs, flowers, cats, etc) you could always paint on or stamp on some of those after you sand down any varnish that might exist on the headboard now.

You could also take a good dremel tool, wood burning kit, or round saw, and cut relief work in the headboard in whatever pattern or design you like.

I think covering it is the best. If you want to change it again later you'll have the same number of options.

Go to http://www.hgtv.com/

It's the site for the cable tv channel - HGTV - Home and Garden TV. Watch the channel too if you have it. It's great!
