If Jesus is God then why on Earth would the Devil try to tempt Him? And why would He pray to Himself?

The devil tried to temp Jesus because he wants to destroy God's relationship to his people.

If Jesus had accepted, He would have shown that He was not the Son of God.
I think the issue here is, Jesus did not take the bait.

Jesus did not pray to Himself, He prayed to His Father in heaven.

Why ask questions unless you can understand the answer?

Well, Jesus is G-d in the flesh. That is why the gospel of Matthew was written, to demonstrate that point to the Jews. Secondarily, the scriptures allude to a rebellion by the angel Lucifer (Satan - the devil), and Satan, being a deceiver, essentially wanted to trick Jesus. If Jesus had taken the bait, then He would have sinned in the flesh, and that would prevent Him from being the sacrificial lamb for us all to atone for our sins. Satan knew what the story was, and he wanted to foil G-d's ultimate plan. Jesus (the human side) prayed to His father (spiritual). We must remember too, that we have these accounts from men who observed Jesus, His comings and goings, and Jesus came as a witness of the new Kingdom to come. He was made to be an example of how we must live our lives. Part of that way of living is through prayer to G-d and studying G-d's word.

Satan still wants to defeat God, that is why he tempted Jesus.
