"3. The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By "half-staff" is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. Crepe streamers may be affixed to spear heads or flagstaffs in a parade only by order of the President of the United States."

Interesting stuff here, didn't know it in such detail:

In most cases - our flag is flown at 'half-mast" at the death of our country's leader, or the death of other state officials. Additionally, national tragedies can call for half-mast flag flying (911 tragedy) and for holidays. This information is usually pronounced on TV news however; I learned all the details about our flag, and our country's protocol in elementary school. (did you know that the flag is not supposed to touch the ground? If you have to destroy it - it has to be specifically cut and then burned?) My daughter's position in ROTC was also very helpful to me as I learned much about how to fold the flag, etc.

Half mast? I guess half way up the pole. Al though everytime I look at a flag at half mast, its a little more than half way up the pole.

i don't think it's a official thing, ppl just do it if they think it should be, cuz whenever i see flags at half mast it's not every flag i c, just some. tomorrow they probably should be cuz it's a national day of mourning for gerald ford.
