the problem with the ten commandments, is that they were created to control a different society, nowadays the ten commandments are obselete because society itself has evolved
also note that the punishment (as written in the old testament) for breaking ANY of the commandments is DEATH
so...
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'
so basically anyone who believes in anything other than god should be put to death?
TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
again, anyone who worships anything other than god, i.e. wiccans and the other multi theist religions, should be put to death?
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'
punishable by death for using a word?
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
so if you work on sunday you should be put to death?
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'
so unruly children should be put to death?
SIX: 'You shall not murder.'
so the death penalty is right?
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'
enforcement of this rule would probably reduce the population of the world by at least 20%
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'
so theft should be punishable by death? what if the theft is to feed a person's starving family?
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
so lying would be punishable by death? that would eliminate a good 90% of the world's population
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'
jealousy is punishable by death, well thats the rest of the world's population gone, jealousy is a natural response

Probably what you think you know about the ten commandments is wrong.
Many people think the 10 commandments are the basis of our laws. This is only partly true. The first half of the Ten Commandments are a series of commands about the recognition of God. It is only the second half that deal with actual behavior towards other humans. The latter are common to almost all religious systems and are seen in many religious and secular law codes -- some of which preceded the Ten Commandments. Law codes in the U.S. and the rest of the western world are derived from a variety of sources, including the Ten Commandments and Pagan Roman laws.
There are three versions of the 10 commandments. If they were from god, why weren't they all the same?
The Ten Commandments originated from ancient Egyptian religion, and the Biblical Jews borrowed the concept after their Exodus from Egypt. The Egyptian Book of the Dead was written circa 1800 BCE. 2 The Schofield Reference Bible estimates that the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt and the provision of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai occurred in 1491 BCE., some three centuries later. Thus, many religious liberals, historians, and secularists have concluded that the Hebrew Scripture's Ten Commandments were based on this earlier document, rather than vice-versa.

What kills me are the people who think that American Jurisprudence is based on the Ten Commandments or that the Ten Commandments is the only written moral code known to man. What ignorance and arrogance combined! Human cultures survived and flourished with their own functioning moral and legal codes for centuries prior to and after the Ten Commandments! How deluded do you have to be to believe that Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Pagans, and Atheists don't also believe that murder and theft are immoral?
Judeo-Christianity is not the first or the only religion to have thought of the Golden Rule. (See links below for additional information about the universality of the Golden Rule and the development of American Law.)
Ever heard of the Code of Hammurabi, Christians? How about Justinian's Law? Look them up. You might learn something. (See links below.)

Many , so called Christians, believe that the ten commandments must be followed to the letter and if people were of a stronger will power with enough fortitude that would be wonderful. but they were given to Gods chosen people and if you would like to find out my understanding of what is expected of myself then you should read the books of the new testament given by Apostle Paul, he lets non-Jews know what is expected of them!

I think the 10 commandents can be boiled down to the golden rule, as in, Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you, with the exception of having no other God before you (the number one commandent, if I'm not mistaken). And I think a lot of us believe in the golden rule, although it would be nice if more did.
