They sure seem to be. This is from their website:

"In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results."

Ya, I heard the bit about Hubbard calling it a joke. Just curious if it sounds like he was taking the unpopular element out of religion; God.

Scientology is a humanistic religion. The self is the god.

First of all, Xenu was the bad guy who put all the souls in the volcano and caused all the thetans to be running around and invading peoples psyches. So you have to be rich to be a scientologist so that you can pay them alot of money to get the thetans out of your mind. They are what are confusing you. Then he made everyone watch these movies that confused all the souls into believing in all the "false" religions of the world.

As to the "science" in scientology, it would be better defined as science-fiction. The whole concept was an invention of L Ron Hubbard, who was a science-fiction writer. He once stated that if a person truly wanted to get rich, he should start his own religion. It seems he may have been right.

At any rate, it seems to be a religion that appeals to people with very large egos, such as some in Hollywood. It is definitely a religion of the self. There is little in it to recommend it as loving and giving to others.

As to your questions, I don't personally believe that being an atheist is possible. If you have a religion of any kind then you believe in something. Some people believe in money or nature or themselves and those are their gods. Most people who consider themselves devout "atheists" work so hard at making people believe their way, they have made this their religion and their god, so they are self defeating in their efforts.

I do believe that there are people who are agnostic. They don't know and they don't care about gods or religions. However, these people generally leave the rest of us alone.

Scientology purports to be compatible with belief in God, but if you dig deep enough, you find that this is impossible.

In an earlier writing Hubbard states that Christ never existed but was only an idea electronically implanted in our minds during the "between lives" period (he called this implant "R6").

Somebody on this planet, about 600 B.C. found some pieces of "R6." I don't know how they found it; either by watching madmen or something. But since that time they have used it. And it became what is known as Christianity. The man on the cross. There was no Christ! The Roman Catholic Church, through watching the dramatizations of people picked up some little fragments of R6. [LRH, Routine R6EW]

Hubbard dismissed the concerns of some members about his disparagement and cynicism about other religions:

"For a long while, some people have been cross with me for my lack of cooperation in believing in a Christian Heaven, God and Christ. I have never said I didn't disbelieve in a Big Thetan but there was certainly something very corny about Heaven et al. Now I have to apologize. There was a Heaven. Not too unlike, in cruel betrayal, the heaven of the Assassins in the 12th century who, like everyone else, dramatized the whole track implants if a bit more so. The symbol of the crucified Christ is very apt indeed. It's the symbol of a thetan betrayed." (Hubbard, HCOB, 11 May 1963)

No Christ, that's an implant. No God, but there might be "a big thetan".

Did you ever see the Planet of the Apes? And in the end the Man (Charleton Heston) found the humans and they were all disfigured living under ground with telepathy and rubber masks to hide their scars,(they had a post nuke look). And then there was a Nuke missile in the canyon that they prayed too, they had this horrible organ playing and singing this off key chant ? That is what I think about Scientology they have their heads in the Stars. I also think they are a little like the Christian Scientists, not quite but a little. And they really have a superior complex and very secretive, and brother you better have lots of money for them worse than the Mormons. ha ha. They really are not about true Science but they are a religion, and not a cult. Happy New Year bubba

No it isn't an Atheist Religion.
In Scientology there are 8 Dynamics. These represent 8 parts of life thro' which each individual is striving to create and survive. These are urges towards existence in 8 different spheres:
Dynamic 1 Self
Dynamic 2 creativity, sex, family unit, rearing of children
Dynamic 3 Groups or as a group, race, etc
Dynamic 4 Mankind
Dynamic 5 All Life forms, including plants, animals, birds etc
Dynamic 6 Physical or Material Universe(Matter Energy Space & Time)
Dynamic 7 Spiritual Universe, spiritual beings, life source.
Dynamic 8 God, Supreme Being, the infinite,or as infinity.
The the purpose is to become increasingly responsible and causative across all 8 Dynmics. No one dynamic has more importance than any other.
The 8th Dynamic is not described or defined but left to the individual's understanding and awareness.
L.Ron Hubbard's research addressed the first 7 Dynamics as this is where he made his discoveries about ife. He stated in a public lecture that he never wrote anything about the 8th Dynamic because he had no knowledge of it . But acknowleged it as a part of life.
He was just being honest.

My, that THC can make you a bit paranoid, huh?
(Sorry I couldn't resist)

Its a really deep scientifical religion. Its odd. Litterally it is based off understandings of quantium physics. IE anything is truly possible if you believe it to be so. Like, you could heal yourself just with positive thought or you could become happy again just by discovering self and understanding the world around you ect.... Of course it gets deeper but thats the jist.

Scientology is a "religion" that was made up by a science fiction writer who did it (with prodding from his friends) to make money and to see if anybody would actually fall for it.

No that doesn't make it atheism. It just means that you observe yourself/your surroundings and there practices and can decide for yourself if it is the right religion for you. Unlike some other Religions which require you blindly believe in their profits.

No, Scientology is a religion. What you said is contradictory. Scientology, from what I heard and studied, doesn't have much to do with "SCIENCE".

Hubbard bet his buddies that he could start the perfect religion. That he knew the things that religion needed in order to grow, to attract people and to keep people. He also knew that people were stupid enough to fall for it. Go figure.

They do believe that beings from other worlds visited here long ago, And that is a belief. So I guess this one is just your own point of view.
