A friend of mine is thinking about asking her doctor for a prescription for diet pills. She hasn't had much luck with dieting, in spite of her dedication and hard work. I'm a little concerned for her.

If her doctor prescribes them, she'll be fine as long as she doesn't abuse them. Over the counter diet pills are a horrible idea- avoid those! Most are just massive doses of caffeine or some other stimulant. Others are herbal supplements, and few have been approved by the FDA. She'll be fine with a prescription, though.

Most of the time, doctors don't prescribe diet pills unless its a serious situation, so don't worry. If she's grossly overweight, she'll be better off loosing the weight anyway, but if not, he'll probably just help her come up with a diet and exercise plan.

Well.. How fat are we talking? Has she possibly tried runing and working out alot. Fitness is really about three factors...

1. Diet
2. Aerobic exercise ( running, tae Bo,etc)
3. Anerobic exercise ( weight lifting, etc)

I wouldnt try any pills unless you started with those 3 things first.

Diet should consist of lean protein only if you are trying to lose weight..this would include chicken breasts, tuna, no fat yogurt, egg whites and things of this nature. You can add some carbs but good ones only like eating a sweet potatoe with no butter, or poer bars are pretty good, and fresh fruits. If you want to increase your metabolism try eating smaller portions but 6 meals throughout the day. Like for instence egg whites for breakfast ..2 hours later have a yogurt..two hours later a chicken breast..two hours later a can of tuna with mustard only. so basically every two hours eat something from your diet.

Aerobic and cardio workouts are excellent ways to burn fat and lose the weight fast, but a huge mistake alot of women make are that they do a ton of cardio and dont eat right so they end up burning more muscle then fat. BIG problem..Your muscle is what burns up the fat and uses the calories..the less muscle you have the less fat you burn. So ladies need to hit the weights too.
Don't worry you wont end up looking like one of those pro body builder girls unless you start taking steriods. You will get great muscle definition though.

After you have committed yourself to a good program as stated above then try adding "supplements" to the mix.. I can reccommend a pill that really worked for me.

I did use HOT ROX and they do work. However I also run 5 miles a day and work out 5 days a week. My diet is not the greateset but the HOT ROX have me really ripped and I didn't lose any muscle( which can be side effect of some pills) thats good stuff

Hope this helps

Maybe instead of asking her doctor for a prescription for diet pills she should ask for a reccomendation for a good nutritionist to help her with the right diet for her as well as the right exercise program. We are all made differently and the same diet does not work for everyone.

Foe, b/c even if she takes diet pills which will most likely supress her appetite she might eat even when she isn't hungry so the pill really doesn't help. As well someone mentioned you can't take many of these pills for extended periods of time.

I don't think diet pills work, but when she goes to a doctor, hopeful he/she will advise of the pro and con of diet pills.

it's up to the person who's dealing with diet pills. if he/she thinks it will be essential to his/her health/body condition, it's absolutely friendly, vis-avis.

but if you will base it on nutritional aspects, taking pills is not the healthy way to stay slim and sound. majority of the said pills have such ingredients that kill tissues and disturb body's digestive system. some will make you feel dizzy, some will make you lose your appetite.

but i suggest that, if you're really aiming for good results and in a healthful way, try long and hard.

If she is morbidly obese he may recommend something, but pills are tricky. Once you stop taking them, the weight comes back. And you can't take them for longer than a few weeks without risking really bad side effects. Good luck.
