The practice you are referring to is called cutting. Some psychologists see it associated with abuse as a child, bullimia, anorexia and other traumatic situations. It is sometimes seen as an escape or punishment for something that may have been done to you or that you witnessed that you may have no control over. Also, it can be associated with self-esteem issues where you might not consider yourself worthy of love. I would highly recommend seeing a psychologist immediately. Do not hold anything back as many times it is the one detail that you hold back that could unlock the reasons why you have chosen to cut yourself.

I have two friends who have done this and both were abused as children. I've also watched a documentary which says this is the main reason why people do this act. There may be something that has happened in your past which you can not recall, or something you have seen happening, and is affecting you emtionally to the point where you want to inflict this injury on yourself. You really should speak to a professional to get to the root of the problem. Good luck...

I did once, when I was under extreme emotional distress.

Here is some info from Teens Health:

Injuring yourself on purpose by making scratches or cuts on your body with a sharp object - enough to break the skin and make it bleed - is called cutting. Cutting is a type of self-injury, or SI.
Cutting is what experts call an unhealthy coping mechanism. This means that the people who do it have not developed healthy ways of dealing with strong emotions, intense pressure, or upsetting relationship problems.

Yes, I've cut and scratched myself before on several occasions, as well as burning myself with a lighter. I don't really know why, but I guess it has to do with making the pain physical and visible, it just sort of makes it eaisier to deal with, and there's always this feeling of relief afterwards.
